LS-312 - Rev 27

The document outlines the procedure for fractionating unextracted reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and hot mix aggregates for testing or incorporation into other test samples. It emphasizes the importance of ensuring representative grading and asphalt content during analysis to minimize variability. The method includes detailed steps for sample preparation, sieving, and reporting results.

MTO LS-312 Method for the Fractionation of Unextracted

Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) and Hot Mix Aggregates
for Testing or Incorporating in Other Test Samples
Revision 27:2012

Scope
1.1 This document outlines the procedure for the fractionation of unextracted
reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) material or any hot mix coarse aggregate
so that it can be tested or representatively combined with other RAP and/or
aggregates in other test samples.
Note 1: Fractionation of fine aggregate is not usually required unless there is
a visually significant content i.e., greater than about 10 to 15% of material
retained on the 2.36 mm sieve.

Significance and Use

3.1 Processed RAP typically consists of a well-graded material comprising
asphalt-coated coarse and fine aggregate, agglomerated particles, and
asphalt rich dust. Care must be taken when analyzing or incorporating RAP,
in particular, into other test samples to ensure that the grading and asphalt
cement content of the material are representative. This test method provides
a means to fractionate unextracted processed RAP material or any other hot
mix aggregate so that, when its properties are determined or when it is
incorporated in multiple test samples (such as for ignition furnace calibration
or mix design etc.), the variability resulting from combining the RAP fractions
and/or aggregates is minimized.
Note 2: The particle size distribution resulting from the fractionation of
unextracted RAP will not be same as that determined for extracted RAP.

Definitions
4.1 Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP): The bituminous material that is
recovered by partial or full depth removal.

4.2 Unextracted RAP: RAP which still contains the asphalt cement used in the
manufacture of the hot mix from which the RAP was derived.

Apparatus
5.1 Balance: A balance or scale accurate to within 0.1% of the test load at any
point within the range.

5.2 Sieves: With square openings and of sizes specified in this method. The
sieve cloth and frame shall conform to ASTM E11 or CAN/CGSB 8.1.

5.3 Sieve Shaker: A mechanical apparatus capable of creating lateral and

vertical motion of sieves accompanied by a jarring motion so as to keep
aggregate moving continuously over the surface of the sieve.

5.4 Sample Splitters: For coarse aggregates (see LS-600, paragraph. 3.6).

Preparation of Material
6.1 RAP or hot mix aggregate samples should be prepared from a larger field
sample taken in accordance with LS-625, ASTM D75, or as otherwise
specified, which is at least 4 times the minimum mass required for
incorporating it in all required test portions. The field sample shall be
thoroughly mixed and reduced by use of a sample splitter or by coning and
then quartering to an amount sufficient for all subsequent testing.

6.2 The resulting sample(s) shall be dried in flat pans at room temperature, with
occasional stirring until there is no visible moisture remaining and the
material is essentially free flowing.

6.3 Material which is obviously oversize (i.e., for RAP, this refers to particles
coarser than 37.5 mm) shall be separated and discarded, unless such
particles readily disintegrate on handling. In that case, the resulting material
shall be included in the prepared sample.

Procedure
7.1 The material to be fractionated, shall be placed in the uppermost sieve of a
progressive series of sieves comprising the following: 19.0 mm, 12.5 mm,
9.5 mm, 4.75 mm, 2.36 mm, and pan.

7.2 The material shall be vibrated by means of a lateral and vertical motion of the
sieves accompanied by a jarring motion so as to keep the sample moving
continuously over the surface of the sieves. The operation shall be continued
by hand or by sieve shaker for a sufficient period so that the size fractionation
is essentially complete.
Note 3: For RAP material, in particular, the sieving action may result in a
breakdown of the retained material on one or more sieves. However, for the
purpose of this test method, it is not necessary to sieve to refusal. Judgement
should always be exercised in stopping the sieving operation when the
particles have been essentially separated by size.

7.3 Record the mass of the fraction retained on each sieve and the pan.
Calculate the percentage retained on each sieve and in the pan. This
fractionation calculation for the RAP and each aggregate will be used in
reconstituting RAP or aggregate portions of any desired mass.

7.4 Transfer each fraction to a flat-bottom pan of appropriate size for future use.

7.5 To produce a test portion of RAP or aggregate or to produce batches of such

material that will be incorporated into other test portions, calculate the mass
of each fraction that will be required, based on the calculation completed
under section 7.3. Scoop from each pan the quantity of material required.
Particular care should always be exercised in obtaining the material from the
passing 2.36 mm sieve fraction to ensure that it is not segregated.

Reporting of Results
8.1 Record the percentages of the RAP or aggregate retained on the 19.0 mm,
12.5 mm, 9.5 mm, 4.75 mm, 2.36 mm, and passing the 2.36 mm sieves on
appropriate forms, together with any information pertaining to the source of
the RAP and each aggregate.
