8 INTRODUCTION
You have learnt different formulae in Mathematics. In Microsoft Excel, formul
ae
written differently. A formula in Microsoft Excel starts with an equal(=) sign
be a maximum of 8192 characters in length.
and:
The data in a formula can consist of any of the following :
Values String or numeric
Cell address Al, B4, etc.
Functions SUM, AVERAGE, MIN, MAX, etc.
Operators +, - , *, /, >, <, etc.
Parenthesis ()
e) TEXT FORMULA
To create a simple text value, enclose it in double quotes. For example : = "Micro
soft".
The ampersand(&) character is used to join text values to one another.
For example: = 'Microsoft' & 'Excel'.
The result of this formula is 'MicrosoftExcel'.
Do You Know
The process of joining text values in a sequence within a formula is called
concatenation.

Practical In Computer Lab

Perform the followinR_ tasks :
1. Open a new worksheet.
2. Enter your first name in cell B2 and last name in cell B3.
3. Enter your first and last name in cell C2 using text formula.,

(;) WRITING SIMPLE FORMULAE
Let us write simple formulae using the arithmetic operators that we had just learnt.
Q) Every formula in Excel must begin with an equal{=) sign.
Q) There must be some arithmetic operator to operate on numbers or data.
Q) The data can be a cell address also.
Look at some valid formulae in Microsoft Excel.
