Consider this fenced yard:

Perimeter: The distance Area: The amount of
around the outside edge space inside a shape
(or ‘rim’) of a shape

What are UNITS?

Area and Perimeter are types of measurement. When we measure things, we have to choose an appropriate unit of
measurement.

Millimetre (mm) inches (in) We can divide this rectangle into

For area and perimeter,
Cenitmeters (cm) feet (ft) squares that are each 1 yard long and 1
we need a unit for
Meters (m) yards (yd) yard wide.
measuring length: Kilometres (Km) Miles (mi)

Finding Area Area is measured in square

units.

Each square has an area of 1 square yard.

There are 12 total squares.
So the area of this rectangle is ___ square yards or ____ yd2

This strategy of finding area is called – tiling.

Using tiling to find perimeter:

1. Divide the rectangle into square units.

2. Count the edges of each square that touches the

Practice Activity 1

 Use the color tile to fill in each of the shape template ( like a puzzle)
 Use tiling (count the squares) to find the area and perimeter of each shape
 Record the area and perimeter for each shape on the student response page

Assignment #1
Using color tiles (paper cut outs) create the following shapes
 Create a shape with an area of 20 and a perimeter of 18
 Create a shape with an area of 5 and a perimeter of 12
 Create a shape with an area of 16 and a perimeter of 20
 Create a shape with an area of 35 and a perimeter of 24
 Create a shape with an area of 25 and a perimeter of 20

What is there are no squares drawn inside a rectangle?

You can always draw

them.
And then use tiling:
A = 12 u2
P = 12 u

But what if the rectangle is very large?

It isn’t practical to draw that

many squares.
Tiling is not an efficient strategy
here.

Perimeter of other shapes

The area and perimeter formulas are great short cuts! The trouble is, they only work for rectangles!
What about other shapes?

For area, you’ll learn some more formulas. Like for triangles: A = (B x H) ÷ 2
For Perimeter, just add up all the sides!

Rectilinear shapes have all right angles. They are

shapes made out of rectangles.

We can use the formula for area of a rectangle (A = L x W) to find the area of rectilinear shapes.

First, draw lines to

divide the shape into
rectangles. 18

Draw lines to divide the shape into rectangles.

Find the area of each rectangle.

Add the areas together 12 + 4 = 16ft2

Assignment #2
 Design a Zoo Challenge
Choose an animal that you want to include in your zoo

Check to find out how large of an enclosure your animals need

Cut out large enough rectangles using grid paper and glue them onto the
square border of your zoo.

Cut out the animals and glue them into their enclosures.

Color your zoo, then cut it out and glue it onto construction paper.

Fill in the table at the bottom with the area and perimeter for each of
your animal enclosures.

Glue it underneath your zoo.

 Design a Zoo Challenge

Step 1
Choose 12 different animals from the list to include in your zoo. You may have up to 3 of each type of
animal in each exhibit. You will need one building for restrooms and one building for food and
beverages.
Step 2
Figure out the amount of square footage you will need for each animal exhibit.
Step 3
Use grid paper to draw the layout or blueprint of your zoo.
Step 4
Label all the exhibits, the restrooms and food pavilion. You may give each exhibit a name. Example: Tiger
Town
Step 5
Complete the area and perimeter worksheet.

The square footage listed is for each individual animal. For example, if you decide to have 3
elephants, then you would need 6,300 sq. ft.
Mammals Area (sq. ft.) Birds Area (sq. ft.)
Elephant 2,100 Peacock 900
Giraffe 2,000 Toucan 900
Zebra 1,900 Flamingo 950
Tiger 2,000 Eagle 1,300
Lion 2,000 Owl 1,200
Monkey 1,600 Ostrich 1,800
Panda 1,800 Amphibians Area (sq. ft.)
Llama 1,000 Poison dart frog 100
Camel 1,500 Bull frog 100
Hyena 1,000 Toad 100
Warthog 1,000 Fire-bellied newt 100
Sloth 500 Salamander 100
Red panda 1,000
Porcupine 500
Bats 2,000 Restrooms should be
Chimpanzee 1,500
Lemur 1,000 between 500 and 600
Leopard 2,000 square feet.
Black bear 1,500
Panda bear 1,500
Retiles Area (sq. ft) The food pavilion
Alligator 1,100 should be between 900
Crocodiles 1,100
Anaconda 600 and 1,000 square feet.
Tortoise 700
Iguana 200
Boa Constrictor 600
Rattle Snake 500

 Zoo Planning Sheet

Use this chart to plan what animals to include in your zoo. For the special habitat considerations
column, consider things that this animal would need to make a realistic habitat. For instance, a
snapping turtle needs a pond, and your probably want to put your snakes in a glass enclosure that
they can’t escape from. Giraffes will require acacia trees and koalas need eucalyptus trees. You will
need to research your animals to make their habitats realistic.
