Definition of internet

The word internet is derived from International Network.

Internet terminologies

Internet- is a network of computers linked together with the purpose of

sharing and advancing information resources.

Browse- This means to view formatted documents on the internet. It is also

the use of a “point-and-click” technology in selecting hypertext links, drop-
down menus, and toolbar buttons to navigate and access resources on the
internet.
Browsing means when a user reads through pages or looks through
contents of files on the internet through a computer.

Browser- browser also known as Web Browser is a software program that

enables you to browse the world wide web.
It is also a software or program used to locate, retrieve, and also display
content on the world wide web, including web pages, images, videos, and
other files.

World Wide Web (WWW)- is a globally connected network of information

resources.
It is the integral part of the internet that consists of a large collection of
documents (stored as web pages) on computers around the world.
Documents can be in form of combined text, sound, pictures, and videos.

Webpage- is a document on a website. Website is composed of a web page,

or collection of related web pages.

Chatroom- is a virtual (will only work with the help of a computer) room
where a chat session takes place. Chat is a text-based communication that
is live.
Cybercafe- Cyber is a prefix often used to describe computers, electronic,
internet, or new things that are being made possible by the spread of
computers. Cybercafe is a place that provides computers and internet
access that people need to go about their daily lives.

Download- is the process of retrieving or copying of files from a page on

the internet, over a network to a computer. You can download documents,
music, pictures and video files.

Upload- is the process of transferring or sending a file to another computer

through the internet.

Downloading- means receiving information from a remote host computer

on the internet, while uploading means sending information to another
computer on the host of the internet.

E-mail- is a short form of electronic mail. It is a text message that may

contain files, images, videos, announcements, electronic magazines e.t.c or
other attachments sent through a network to a specified individual or group
of individuals.

Homepage- it is the first and main page of a website where visitors can find
hyperlinks to other pages in the site. The page that appears each time a
person starts a web browser is the homepage.

HTML- this is the acronym for Hypertext Markup Language. It is a computer

language with which websites are designed and programmed. HTML covers
how webpages are formatted and displayed.

HTTP- is short for Hypertext Transfer Protocol, which is a set of rules for
communication used by the world wide web for users to exchange
information found on web pages. OR, is a set of rules for communication
between www clients and servers, irrespective of the type of computer.

Internet Service Provider (ISP)- is a company that provides internet

services, including personal and business access to the internet. E.g MTN,
GLO, Visaphone, MSN&AOL, e.t.c. They are the first link between users and
the internet.
Intranet- is a private network-like network belonging to an organisation,
usually a company, and is accessible only by the organisation’s members
or employees.

Extranet- is a private internet-like network for an organisation, partially

accessible to authorized outsiders, but fully accessible to organisation’s
members or employees.

Protocol- is a set of rules or standard for exchanging data over a computer

network such as local area network, internet, intranet, e.t.c.
Protocols:
 FTP- File Transfer Protocol
 TCP- Transmission Control Protocol
 IP- Internet Protocol:
 UDP- User Datagram Protocol

There are two major protocols used on the internet: Transmission Control
Protocol and Internet Protocol.

Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)- is a protocol that enables application

programs and computing devices to exchange messages over a network .
It breaks data up into packets that network can handle efficiently, verifies
whether the entire packet has arrived at their destination and
“reassembles” the data.

Internet Protocol (IP)- is a set of standards for addressing and routing data
on the Internet.. It envelops and addresses data, enables the network to
read the envelop and forward the data to its destination and defines how
much data can fit in a single “envelop” (a packet).

The difference between TCP and IP is that IP is the part that obtains the
address to which data is sent. TCP is responsible for data delivery once that
IP address has been found.

FTP- File Transfer Protocol: is a network protocol for transmitting files

between computers over Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP) connections.
User Datagram Protocol: is used to transfer large files across the internet.
Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) falls short when it comes to transferring
large files at fast speeds in comparison to UDP.

Website- is a collection of related web documents or webpages that a web

server makes available to the public.

Router- this is a specialized computer that carries traffic on the internet

and picks the most efficient route for the transmission of each packet of
data on their way to their destination.

Backbone- the backbone of the internet consists of high speed data lines
that connect major networks all over the world.

MODEM- full meaning for MODEM is Modulator/Demodulator. It is a device

that makes it possible for computers to connect over a telephone line.
Modems are mostly effective/useful when computers are too far apart to
be joined by a standard computer cable. Modem makes communication
between two or more computers at a distance possible.

Uniform Resource Locator ( URL)- specifies the location of a resource on

the internet. Consists of basic address and path.

Domain name- this is a name used to identify and locate computers

(servers) connected to the internet. E.g http://www.yahoo.com. It is the
address of a webserver, every website must have a domain name.

Hyperlink- is an icon, graphic, or word in a document that leads to another

file or object.
