As one of the most volcanically active geographies in the world, the islands of Japan hold nearly
30,000 naturally occurring hot springs of varying mineral compositions, colours, and
temperatures. Historically, these 'onsen' form a vital part of the national identity. 'Towards a Nude
Architecture' explores this narrative through an architectural lens, chronicling centuries of steam
and soaking through the eyes of an architect. In three chapters examining past, present, and
future, the book plunges into the spiritual roots of bathing, the diverse contemporary structures
built around it, and the lasting influence of this poetic mingling between architecture, nature, and
the naked body.

The revised edition of Weather in the City draws on current examples in demonstrating how the
comfort of the urban environment can be enhanced using modern techniques and new methods.
How we experience the urban climate depends on various physical and psychological factors.
Landscape architect and urban designer Sanda Lenzholzer shows how basic climatic processes
work in an urban environment, and how they can be influenced by spatial planning and urban
design. The book is both a reference work and a source of inspiration for all those engaged in
creating a liveable city, be they clients, policymakers, professionals or students involved in urban
design, landscape architecture and planning.

The fifth issue of Dixit, the architectural criticism journal, explores conditions through a dialogue
between architects Charlotte Truwant + Dries Rodet and Mio Tsuneyama + Fuminori Nousaku.
What defines architectural practice today? Are conditions of use and society self-imposed or
externally dictated? If challenges like global warming seem universal, are they truly so? This
issue questions whether conditions are absolute or shaped by social, economic, political, and
cultural frameworks - and whether accepting them is a choice. Caryatide Editions continues the
tradition of critical architectural discourse, engaging with contemporary issues through a socially
and politically informed lens. Published three times a year, Dixit invites two contributors per issue
to reflect on a new theme. Truwant + Rodet +, founded in 2015 in Basel, explores architecture
critically, while Tokyo-based architects Fuminori Nousaku and Mio Tsuneyama focus on
contemporary cities and ecosystems.

How can we position ourselves at the opposite ends of perspective? And how do we involve
personal space, meaning, context, aspects of identity, the unknown, and more? We start from
references. Something speaks, depth invites, elements unfold_ This research effort by Sarah M.
Whiting (Harvard Graduate School of Design), Wim Goes (University of Leuven, Faculty of
Architecture), Volkmar Muhleis (LUCA School of Arts, Ghent), and Ron Witte (Harvard GSD)
results in an intermedium workpiece using the unframed elements of reverse perspective. From
this intermedium, we are able to question how it could relate to an architectural context or
landscape.

Founded in 1985, Neometro has established itself as Melbourne's most long-standing design-
focused and socially led development group, with numerous projects that enhance everyday
urban living. Here, the residents of some of these buildings open their doors to share their stories
of life in high-density surroundings. Featuring detailed photography of each home, it offers an
intimate insight into a mode of dwelling that, handled thoughtfully, is rapidly gaining popularity in
Australia. Through personal anecdotes and a visual tour of these private worlds, 'City Living'
illustrates how good architecture and design can help to create liveable and enduring urban
communities.

Despite growing calls for global architectural histories, the historiography of modern architecture
remains depicted predominantly by Western figures, narratives, and experiences. This publication
takes a different approach by uncovering previously overlooked histories and contributions that
shaped the Arab world's modern built environment. It considers projects from the Arabian Gulf,
the Levant, and North Africa during a critical moment when several Arab countries were entering
a new phases of post-colonial nation-building. From both within and outside the architectural
profession, a multifaceted exchange of ideas informed architectural thinking in the wake of
independence.

there are a thousand still, you can't quite believe what your eyes reveal." Where does an idea
come from? How can we go looking for it? Ukko de Ukki is the conscience of architect Michele De
Lucchi, an alter ego full of wisdom and irony who in this book gives us a glimpse of how his ideas
are born. Feeling before understanding, finding the right environment, feeling in tune with the

This fourth book in a series of monographs on projects by h2o architectes looks back at the
Chapelle Charbon urban development project in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, part of a major
transformation of north-eastern Paris and, in particular, the area around Porte de la Chapelle. The
project proposed by h2o aims to transform a former indus- trial and rail logistics site perceived as
a nuisance into a new destination, in particular by connecting all the former dead-end roads to
open up the site. The project is based on the creation of a large park of over 6 hectares, delivered
in advance of the construction of new housing and roads.

Exponential population ageing is changing how we coexist in urban spaces. Improving discourse
on "care" is high on the agenda in our globally ageing world. The task of densifying cities with
hundreds of apartments in single buildings reminds us that we are responsible for incredibly
sophisticated social structures. In designing these projects, de Architekten Cie. has accumulated
significant experience, understanding the challenges on both architectural and urban scales, as
well as their societal and emotional dimensions. 'The Architecture of Ageing' shares the
experiences of their long-term collaborative project on housing, ageing, and care in the city.

diverse pursuits, from the rehabilitation of industrial ports into lively urban centres, to questions of
accessibility and the extension of habitable space onto and into bodies of water. Examples such
as Lonna Sauna in Helsinki by OOPEAA and Bademaschinen in Oslo by ACT! and Borhaven
Arkitekter continue the region's historical wellness practices, while urban-scale developments like
Copenhagen's Nordhavn by Cobe tackle the challenge of designing for a future marked by

modern Western-style architecture, refining its expertise in the period before World War II. This
style came to be widely appreciated as a valuable historical asset expressing the history and
culture of Japan. 'Weaving Time' focuses on projects Takenaka has completed since 2000 and
presents its method for passing on historical architecture to future generations. It provides
insights into how the architecture of our own time can be cherished and used for generations to
come, expand the possibilities of design, create diverse values, and contribute to a sustainable

This issue explores the intersection of available resources and creative finesse in architecture as
a critical response to environmental demands. Ten international architecture firms, including
Lutjens Padmanabhan, Raamwerk, and Vivas Arquitectos, demonstrate how stripping away
unnecessary layers yields powerful results and imparts identity to the final outcome. Their
projects showcase simple constructions that transform industrialized assembly into personalized
architectural patterns.

The magazine returns to the terrain of architectural language in this issue, presenting projects
associated with abstraction. In the field of architecture, figuration and abstraction have been
opposite poles of a debate highlighting the tension between tradition and modernity. And while
the divide between expressive and geometric abstraction is obvious, in architecture the distinction
is more complex. This issue examines several exemplary works, including a house in Portugal by
Aires Mateus, NEAC Visitor Centre in the Netherlands by KAAN Architecten, and the control
building for a solar plant in Turkey. Also in this issue, a visual essay by Inaki Bergera on bunkers
in the Pyrenees.
