5𝑥+2 𝑥+10
Solve: +2=
3 9
(Multiply both sides of the equation by 9 ( because 9 is the LCM of given denominators)
9( 5𝑥+2 ) 9(𝑥+10)
+2x9=
3 9
3 ( 5x +2) + 18 = x + 10
15x + 6 + 18 = x + 10
15x + 24 = x + 10
15x – x = 10 – 24
14x = - 14
x = -1
Linear Equations in one variable
𝑎𝑥+𝑏
We shall see how to solve equations of the type = k, where a,b,c,d and k
𝑐𝑥+𝑑
are constants.
Example,
Present ages of Anu and Raj are in the ratio 4:5. Eight years
from now the ration of their ages will be 5:6. Find their
present ages.
SOLN: Let the present ages of Anu and Raj be 4x and 5x
4x 5x
After 8 years, 4x +8 5x +8
8 years from now the ratio of their ages would be in
5:6
Linear Equations in one variable
4𝑥+8 5
= First reduce it to a linear form,
5𝑥+8 6
Multiply both sides by 5x + 8
4𝑥+8 5
(5x + 8) = (5x + 8)
5𝑥+8 6
5
4x + 8 = ( 5x + 8 )
6
cross multiplying
6 ( 4x + 8) = 5 ( 5x + 8 )
24x + 48 = 25x + 40
48 – 40 = 25x – 24x
8=x
Therefore, present age = 4x= 4x8 = 32 yrs
present age = 5x = 5x8 = 40yrs
