EET212 – Signals and communication systems
Spring 2025 - Assignment #1

Assignment Rules & Regulations:

● Plagiarism, cheating, or any form of academic dishonesty is strictly prohibited. All work submitted must be the student's
own, and all external sources, such as code snippets, libraries, or academic papers, must be properly cited.
● Requests for extensions must be requested in advance of the deadline and should be supported by valid and documented
reasons, such as medical or family emergencies. Extensions will be granted at the instructor's discretion.
● If you encounter any issues or require clarifications related to the assignment, promptly communicate with the instructor
or teaching assistant. Do not share your assignment solutions with classmates before the submission deadline.

Problem 1:
Determine the value of E∞ and P∞ for each of the following signals. Then classify whether it is an
energy or power signal:

a) x(t) = e (j(t + π/5))cos(t) c) x[n] = [0.2 + j0.15]n u[n]

(j(t + π/3))
d) x[n] = jn
b) x(t) = e u(t)

Problem 2:
Determine if each of the following signals is periodic or not. If the signal is periodic, determine its

fundamental period.

a) x(t) = ∞Σ -∞e-(2t – k) u(2t - k) c) x[n] = jn

b) x(t) = Even[sin(2πt)u(t)] d) x[n] = sin((3π/7)n)cos((π/7)n)

Problem 3:

A continuous-time signal x(t) is shown in the figure below. Sketch and label carefully each of the

following signals.

a) 2x(3 - t/3) c) Odd(x(t))

b) [Even(x(t))]⋅δ(t - 3) d) x(t)⋅u(-t + 1)

Problem 4:
A discrete-time signal x[n] is shown in the figure below. Sketch and label carefully each of the

following signals.

a) x[n]⋅δ[n - 2] c) Odd(x[n])

b) x[n]⋅u[3 - n] d) 2x[2 - 2n]⋅u[n + 2]

Problem 5:
1. Memory or memoryless
2. Linearity

3. Causality
4. Time invariance

5. Stability
6. Invertibility

Check these properties for each of the following continuous-time systems. And justify your answers
where y(t) denotes the system output and x(t) is the system input.

b) y[n] = n⋅x[n]
a) y(t) = [cos(3t)]x(t)

Problem 6:
Consider the LTI system with unit impulse response h[n] given by:

h[n] = (1/2)^(n-1) {u[n – 4] – u[n – 10]}

Given the input as: x[n] = u[n]

Find the output y(t) of the system.

Deadline & Submission:
