Assignment 4

The document outlines an assignment focused on linear mappings, including tasks to determine if given functions are linear mappings and to find specific linear maps based on provided conditions. It also includes proofs related to properties of linear maps, such as the transformation of zero elements and the characterization of kernels and images as subspaces. Additionally, it addresses the linear independence of vectors and the linearity of inverse mappings.

Course Code: NS103-b Assignment-4

1. Check the following are linear mapping or not.

a) T (x, y, z) = (x + y, x − z)

b) T (x, y, z) = x2 + y 2 + z 2

c) T (p) = p′ , ∀p ∈ P ; where T : P → P and P is a set of polynomials.

2. Determine whether there exists a linear map in the following cases, if it does then find

the formula.

a) T : R2 → R2 such that T (1, 2) = (3, 0) and T (2, 1) = (1, 2)

b) T : R2 → R2 such that T (0, 1) = (3, 4), T (3, 1) = (2, 2) and T (3, 2) = (5, 7)

3. Prove that a linear map T : U → V transforms the zero of U into the zero of V .

4. Let T : U → V be a linear map. Then show that

a) Ker(T ) is a subspace of U

b) Image(T ) is a subspace of V .

5. Let T : U → V be a linear map and suppose u1 , u2 , u3 , · · · , un ∈ U have the property

that their images T (u1 ), T (u2 ), T (u3 ), · · · , T (un ) are linearly independent. Show that

the vectors u1 , u2 , u3 , · · · , un are also linearly independent.

6. Suppose that T : U → V is one-one and onto. Show that the inverse mapping

T −1 : V → U is also linear.

7. Find a linear map T : R3 → R4 whose image is generated by (1, 2, 0, −4) and

(2, 0, −1, −3).
