MARQUEE
TOOLS &
USING SHAPE
THE MARQUEE TOOL
The Marquee Tool is a selection tool in graphic design software like Adobe
Photoshop. It allows you to create rectangular or elliptical selections in an
image, which can then be edited, moved, or modified independently of the rest
of the image.
THE MARQUEE TOOL AND USING SHAPE
The Marquee Tool can be used with different shapes by selecting the desired
shape option in the tool options bar. In addition to the default rectangular and
elliptical shapes, you can create selections in the shape of a single row or
column of pixels, or use the "Fixed Size" option to create a selection with
specific dimensions. This tool is versatile for various design and editing
purposes.
01 The Rectangle Marquee tool selects a rectangular
area in an image.

02
The Elliptical Marquee tool,
hidden under the Rectangle
Marquee tool, selects
elliptical areas.
03 The Single Row Marquee tool and Single Column tool
select either a 1-pixel-high row or a 1-pixel-wide column,
respectively.
02
MORE SELECTION
TOOLS AND
TECHNIQUE
01 The Lasso tool traces a freehand
selection around an area.

02
The Polygonal Lasso tool sets
anchor points in straight-line
segments around an area.
03 The Magnetic Lasso tool works something like a combination of
the other two lasso tools, and gives the best results when good
contrast exists between the area you want to select and its
surroundings.
04 The Object Selection tool is useful for automatically selecting
objects or regions such as people, cars, pets, sky, water,
buildings, plants, and mountains in an image.
05 The Quick Selection tool quickly “paints” a selection by
automatically finding and following defined edges in the
image.
06 The Magic Wand tool selects parts of an image based on the
similarity in color of adjacent pixels. It is useful for
selecting odd-shaped areas that share a specific range of
colors.
03
PLACING A
SELECTION
01
In the Tools panel, select the Quick
Selection tool.
02
Drag over an area you want to select. This tool tries
to find image edges and automatically stops the
selection there.

Make brush size smaller:

- Hold ALT + right mouse - drag
left or right

Remove extra objects:

- Hold ALT to make the
selection minus
03 Click the mask button to see the
image that you select

Bar and choose Color Range
02 This opens the Color Range dialog box. Click the eye droper
tool then click a color for making our initial color selection

05
TRANSFORMING
A SELECTION
The Transform feature allows users to alter their
object or selection in a variety of ways, such as scale,
rotate, distort, or flip (mirror). To use the Transform
feature, select a layer or create a new selections. Got
to Edit in the menu, select Transform, and select the
type of transformation you wish to make
01 Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool.

Then drag out an initial selection outline.

To show you the difference between Photoshop's Free Transform
command and Transform Selection, I'll go up to the Edit menu in the
Menu Bar and choose Free Transform.

Free Transform resizes the pixels that were selected.

To resize just the selection outline, go up to the Select menu and
choose Transform Selection.

Transform Selection resizes the selection outline,

not the pixels inside it.
If you right-click inside the transform box, you have access to the
same options that you have with Free Transform, including Skew,
Distort, Perspective, and even Warp. But with Transform Selection,
these options apply to the selection outline itself.
Skew Distort

Perspective Grid outline

To accept your changes to the outline and close the Transform
Selection command, click the checkmark in the Options Bar. Or you
can click the Cancel button next to the checkmark to close
Transform Selection without saving your changes. But I’ll click the
checkmark.
I want to hide everything outside the
selection outline and replace it with
transparency. So I’ll convert the outline
into a layer mask.

To turn a selection outline into a mask, all

you need to do is click the Add Layer Mask
icon at the bottom of the Layers panel.
And everything that was outside the outline is instantly replaced
with transparency.
1.But instead of a transparent background, I want to fill the background with a solid
color. So I’ll add a Solid Color fill layer by clicking the New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon at
the bottom of the Layers panel:

2. And choosing Solid Color.

3. Choose the color you want

Then back in the Layers panel, I’ll drag
the fill layer below the image.

And the area around the selection is now

filled with black.

FIXING IMAGE
WITH THE USE OF
HEALING BRUSH
TOOL
The Healing Brush and Patch tools allow you fix
imperfections, like scratches, wrinkles, dust spots,
etc., causing them to disappear into the surrounding
image. They work very much like the cloning tools.
You sample pixels in one are of an image, then paint
over another area replacing it with the sampled
pixels.
01 Select the Healing brush tool from the toolbar.
02 In the tool options panel that opens, tap the three dots icon to open
the Healing Brush settings panel. Here, you can choose the Blend
mode, Sample, and set the Roundness and Angle sliders to the
desired value.

THE VIGNETTE
EFFECT
THE VIGNETTE
EFFECT
A VIGNETTE IS A DARKER BORDER - SOMETIMES AS
A BLUR OR A SHADOW - AT THE PERIPHERY OF
PHOTOS. IT CAN BE AN INTENTIONAL EFFECT TO
HIGHLIGHT CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THE IMAGE OR AS
A RESULT OF USING THE WRONG SETTINGS,
EQUIPMENT OR LENS WHEN TAKING A PHOTO.
Add a Vignette With the Lens Correction Filter
Open the Lens Correction Window

01
Open the photo you want to use for the vignette Add the Vignette Effect
effect. Choose “Lens Correction…” from the Filter Select the Custom tab.
menu
You’ll see two sliders to control the vignette effect.
One to set the amount and one to set the midpoint.
You can see how it will look in the preview image. Option 2

02
Add a Vignette With a Levels Layer

Click on the “Create new fill or adjustment

layer” icon and select “Levels…”. The Levels
panel will pop up
Pull the grey triangle to the right. This will darken
the image. If you want the effect even more intense,
pull the white triangle of the slider below to the left.
Step 2. Masking

Select the Paint Brush tool and make

sure the color is set to black.
Make sure the layer mask thumbnail of the Curves
layer is selected.
Pick a large and soft brush and paint over the
middle of your photo. The darkening will
disappear where you paint with black.
You can see how the mask thumbnail
changes.

If you want to add

darkening again, paint
with white over your
photo.
This method allows you
to adjust not just the
size but also the shape
of the vignette effect.
You can go for a circle,
oval or even a straight
line.
You can always change
the intensity of the
effect by double-clicking
on the Levels layer.

CROP &
STRAIGHTEN
PHOTOS
AUTOMATICALLY
Cropping a photo is a basic photo editing step. It
strengthens the composition by allowing you to remove
unnecessary space. Photoshop has a powerful Crop tool
that not only removes but also straightens an askew photo.
It is automatic and it can work on multiple photos at once.
Go to File > Choose Automate > Crop
and Straighten Photos.

As the example shows, several photos are part

of one single digitally scanned image. You can
separate each of them by drawing a selection
and then copying them into separate
Photoshop images. There's an easier way with
the automatic crop and straighten tool.
