What are the lessons from the case?
Passenger drones and flying cars are innovations in the vehicle industry that can potentially
transform the way goods and people can be transported, disrupt the mobility landscape, create
new roles across various industries, and highlight the importance of technology maturity and
integration. For such innovation to become a commercial reality, several challenges need to be
addressed, and it needs to be flawless almost 99.9% of the time. That is one of the reasons why,
even though the concept was introduced decades ago, it has not been developed and
commercialized.
While challenges remain that need to be addressed, the potential benefits of these vehicles cannot
be overlooked. Businesses that can overcome the challenges and capitalize on the opportunities
stand to gain a significant competitive advantage in the mobility landscape of the future.
Passenger drones and flying cars are going to change the landscape of transportation in the
future. Hence, businesses should be looking at the bigger picture. What opportunities are going
to be created by the commercialization and use of passenger drones and flying cars? Businesses
that focus on the byproduct opportunities of innovation can gain a competitive advantage in the
market.
What industries and how are they affected by the case's learnings?
The huge potential changes that passenger drones and flying cars can bring can be felt across a
range of industries, including aerospace, defense, automotive, and technology.
Transportation: Passenger drone and flying car manufacturers could emerge as key players in
the transportation industry, providing a new mode of transportation that could potentially replace
traditional modes of transport such as cars, buses, and trains.
Aerospace: The aerospace industry is particularly well-positioned to benefit from the emergence
of passenger drones and flying cars. Aerospace companies could potentially provide the
technology, equipment, and expertise needed for the development and production of these
vehicles.
Automotive: As passenger drones and flying cars become more popular, traditional automotive
manufacturers could potentially lose market share to passenger drone and flying car
manufacturers. It could potentially reduce the demand for traditional cars, particularly in urban
areas where on-demand urban transport services become more prevalent.
Logistics: The use of passenger drones and flying cars for on-demand delivery services can
potentially provide faster and more efficient delivery of goods, especially for time-sensitive
items such as medical supplies and perishable goods. It can significantly reduce delivery times as
well as delivery costs.
