Time - Dates

The document explains the concept of time, including its measurement in various units such as seconds, minutes, and hours, and the use of AM and PM. It describes how to read both analog and digital clocks, as well as how to perform addition and subtraction of time. Additionally, it covers conversions between different time units and provides information about the structure of dates.

TIME &

DATES
TIME
- the measure of how long it takes for things to
happen.
- measured in seconds, minutes, hours, days,
months, years, etc.

The colon (:) is used to separate hours from

minutes, with no space before or after the colon.

In a day, there are 24 hours. To tell the time,

from midnight to noon, we use AM, while from noon
to midnight, we use PM.

Measuring Time through Clocks

Analog Clock
- a clock that has moving hands hours marked
as 1 to 12 to show the time.
- The little hand is the hour hand, the longer
hand is the minute hand, while the very thin hand is
the second hand.

Analog Clock
Reading an Analog Clock

Step 1: Begin with the hour hand. If the hand is

exactly pointing to a number, then, that is the current
hour. However, most of the time, the hour hand is in
between two numbers. Then, the number behind the
hand is the current hour.

Step 2: To determine the minutes, multiply the

pointed number by the minute hand with 5. If it is
pointed at 1, then it indicates 5 minutes past the
current hour.

Step 3: Combine the values and separate them with

a colon. Also, indicate if it’s still approaching noon,
then it’s AM. If it’s approaching midnight, then it’s PM.

Digital Clock
- directly tells the time.
- can be a 12-hour clock or a 24-hour clock.

Reading a 24-hour digital clock

This clock does not use AM or PM. After passing

12:00 PM, the hour number continues to count from
13 to 0 (24).

If the hour is more than 12, simply subtract 12

from the number of hours and use PM.
TIME
Addition of Time
If the minutes are 60 or more, subtract 60 from
the minutes and add 1 to hours.
For example, add 2:45 and 1:20.

Add the hours: 2 + 1 = 3

Add the minutes: 45 + 20 = 65
Deduct 60 in the total minutes: 65 - 60 = 5
Add 1 to the hours: 3 + 1 = 4

Therefore, the sum of 2:45 and 1:20 is 4:05.

Otherwise, if the minutes are not 60 or more,

then, directly add the hours and the minutes.

Subtraction of Time
If the minutes are negative, add 60 to the minutes
and subtract 1 from the hours.
For example, what is 4:10 minus 1:35?

Subtract the hours: 4 - 1 = 3

Subtract the minutes: 10 - 35 = -25
Add 60 to the minutes: -25 + 60 = 35
Deduct 1 from the hours: 3 -1 = 2
Therefore, 4:00 minus 1:35 is 2:35.
TIME
Conversions
1 minute = 60 seconds
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 hour = 60 minutes = 3600 seconds (60 × 60)
1 day = 24 hours
1 week = 7 days
1 year = 365 days
1 year = 12 months
1 year = 52 weeks
1 leap year = 366 days (occurs every four years
in which February has 29 days)

When converting higher units of time to its lower

units, multiply, while when converting lower units
to higher units, divide.
DATES
- are times consisting of the day, month, and
year. The values are usually separated with
slashes (/).

January, March, May, July, August, October, and

December have 31 days. April, June, September,
and November have 30 days. February has 28
days and on a leap year, it has 29 days.
