National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur

Department of Mathematics and Scientific Computing

Mid-Semester Exam, February 2025
Subject: Real and Complex Analysis
Subject Code: MA 222
Time: 90 Minutes
Full Marks: 30

Instructions:
1. Course objectives are mentioned alongside each question.
2. Provide a proper explanation for your answers.

Question 1: Answer the following (1 × 5 =

5)
a) Exhibit a bijection between N (the set of natural numbers) and the set of all even integers
greater than 20.

b) Find all real numbers x that satisfy the inequality 4 < x² < 9.

c) Show that if (x ) and (y ) are sequences such that (x ) and (x + y ) are convergent, then
(y ) is also convergent.

d) State the squeeze theorem for sequences. Use the squeeze theorem to prove that 1/(n+4)
converges.

e) Show that lim →2 (n)/(2+n) = 1/2.

Question 2: Answer the following (2 × 5 =

10)
a) Show that if a, b ∈ R and a ≠ b, then there exist ε-neighborhoods U of a and V of b such that
U ∩ V = ∅.

b) Define the greatest lower bound (glb) of a set of real numbers. State a glb property of R. Find
the glb of the set {(-1)^n / n}.

c) State the definition of the limit of a sequence and use it to show that lim (n→∞) (3n+2)/(2n+3)
= 3/2. [bs 380]

d) Let x₁ = 6 and x ₊₁ = (1/2) x + 2 for n ∈ N. Show that (x ) is bounded and monotonic. Find
its limit.

e) Prove that if A ⊂ R and f: A → R has a limit at a, then f is bounded on some neighborhood

of a.

Question 3: Answer the following (3 × 5 =

15)
a) If x and y are real numbers with x < y, then prove that there exists a rational number r ∈ Q
and an irrational number s ∈ R - Q such that x < r < y and x < s < y.

b) Prove that the interval I = [0,1] is uncountable. Express 1/7 as a periodic decimal.

c) Determine the convergence or divergence of the series: [b.s grewal pg 385-386]

(i) Σ (n=1 to ∞) (√n / (n²+1))
(ii) Σ (n=2 to ∞) (1 / (2^n (log n)^p)), p > 0.

d) Analyze the convergence of the series 1 + (2/3)x + (2×3 / 3×5)x² + (2×3×4 / 3×5×7)x³ + ....
[b.s grewal pg 393]

e) Let f: R → R be defined as:

● f(x) = x if x ∈ Q
● f(x) = 0 if x ∈ R - Q
Prove that f has a limit at x = 0, but does not have a limit at c ≠ 0.
