Question:

1. Design a PID controller to control the speed of a DC motor and simulate its response using
MATLAB/Simulink.

System Model:

The dynamics of a simple DC motor can be represented by the following transfer function:

Given Parameters:

 Moment of inertia J=0.01 kg⋅m^2

 Damping coefficient b=0.1 N⋅m⋅s
 Motor torque constant KT=0.01 Nm/A
 Back EMF constant Ke=0.01 V⋅s/rad
 Armature resistance R=1 Ω
 Armature inductance L=0.5 H

Step 1: Substitute these values into the transfer function formula:

Step 2: Simplify the expression: [3]

Steps for the Assignment:

1. Model the DC Motor:
Use the transfer function provided to model the motor in Simulink or MATLAB. [2]
2. Design a PID Controller:
Implement a PID controller to control the speed of the motor. The control objective is to achieve the
desired speed while minimizing overshoot, rise time, and steady-state error. [2]
3. Tune the PID Parameters:
Adjust the proportional (P), integral (I), and derivative (D) gains to improve system performance.
Use trial and error or a tuning method like Manual or Automatic. [2]
4. Simulate the System Response:
Simulate the closed-loop response of the motor speed to a step input. Compare the system’s
behaviour with and without the PID controller, explain in your own words. [1]

Deliverables:

o Block diagram of the motor and controller in Simulink.

o PID tuning parameters and justification for chosen values.
o Plots of system response (speed vs. time) with and without the PID controller.
o Analysis of the results

NOTE 1: Each and every output screen shot is necessary for the model which you are going to create.

NOTE 2: where ever we said to explain, explanation should be Min 6 lines.

NOTE 3: The evaluation will be based up the answer key.
