Robotics LR-3

The document discusses control systems in robotics, focusing on open-loop and closed-loop systems. Open-loop systems operate without feedback, making them simpler and faster, while closed-loop systems utilize feedback for accuracy and precision. Examples illustrate their applications, such as robots playing music (open-loop) versus robots following a line (closed-loop).

Control Systems
Learning Outcomes: Open & Closed Systems in a Robotic System
Concepts learned (Mention 2/3 principles):
Open-loop control Systems: There is no connecting action taking place in an Open loop system. i.e no Feedback,
from the output to adjust the input

Closed-loop control Systems is a type of control system that uses feedback from the output to adjust the input. It
constantly monitors the output and compares it with a desired value or a reference signal, and then modifies the
input accordingly to reduce the error or deviation. For example, a robot arm that moves from point A to point B
using a camera or a force sensor is a closed-loop system. The robot checks whether it has reached the desired
position or not, and corrects any errors or disturbances that might occur.

New Technologies Learned:

 Open-loop control systems are usually simpler, cheaper, and faster than closed-loop systems.
For example, open-loop systems can be used for simple tasks like switching on a light, heating
water, or spinning a fan.
 Closed-loop control systems are usually more accurate, precise, and robust than open-loop
systems.
Related Project/Practice work experience and learned:

New Software /Machine/Tool/ Equipment/ Experiment learned:

Two basic types of robot control systems –
 Servo controlled and
 Non-servo controlled.
Application of Concept(s) (preferably real life scenario):
Open-loop systems: used for tasks- switching on a light, heating water, or spinning a fan.
Closed-loop systems: for complex tasks like balancing a robot, tracking a target, or controlling a
vehicle.
Case Studies/ Examples:
Examples of Open-loop and closed-loop control in ROBOTICS
1. A ROBOT playing music on a keyboard is an open-loop system, as it does not use feedback
from the sound to adjust its movements.
2. A ROBOT that follows a line on the floor using a camera is a closed-loop system, as it uses
feedback from the image to adjust its direction.
3. A ROBOT throwing a ball into a basket is an open-loop system, while one catching a ball
thrown by a human is a closed-loop system, as it uses feedback from the ball position and
speed to adjust its position and timing.
