1972009 - How to create an SLT

Configuration Step-by-Step
Component: CA-LT-SLT (SAP Landscape Transformation Replication Server (SLT)), Version: 7, Released
On: 16.03.2023

Symptom
This Knowledge Base Article (KBA) is part of a series of HANA
Operation Recommendations.
Focus view of this KBA is on a detailed step-by-step approach to
create a new SLT configuration.
End-Users are guided step-by-step through the creation of a new System Landscape Transformation
configuration. Detailed screenshots are shared for best illustration.

Environment
SAP Landscape Transformation replication server

Resolution
Note: The steps and screenshots below show the LTR transaction being used. In later SLT versions, the LTRC
transaction needs to be used to create a new configuration, otherwise the general steps are the same. The
user interface can be different to what is shown below, where options may be in a different step than before
(e.g. moved from the 'Transfer Settings' to 'General Settings' screen). The in-application help (Shift + F1) will
provide more information for all the options and in which step they are found for the SLT version being used.

Create configuration in several steps:

1. Choose Configuration Name

2. Check if RFC connection in SLT server is set (SM59 – ABAP
Connections)
Or create a new RFC connection:

2.1 Create RFC USER in the SOURCE System (SU01). The user should have active role
"SAP_IUUC_REPL_REMOTE".

2.2 Create RFC Connection in the SLT System (SM59) and use the RFC User you have created.

The following figures illustrate the tool view of the tasks outlined above:

Note: If 'Read from Single Client Only' is selected, then every configuration that share the same triggers and
logging table for the source table, will also need this setting selected and use the same client to the source
system. Said option should be left blank otherwise. If this option needs to be changed after creating the
configuration, then it is recommended to delete the configuration and recreate it (meaning all the tables being
replicated by the configuration will need to be reloaded in the new configuration).

3. Choose RFC connection

4. Specify Target System (HANA DB is a Non-SAP System)
The user you choose (Administration user name) is required to have the authorization for schema
"SYS_REPL".

Keep in mind:

The user you use for the first configuration to a specific HANA will be SCHEMA_OWNER of schema
"SYS_REPL". This is not always the SYSTEM USER and can create problem if you create a new configuration
(second configuration) with a different user, because this different user may not have enough authorizations
(Error message: Error occurred when inserting in the database).

In schema "SYS" view "SCHEMAS" you can find the SCHEMA_OWNER of the specific schema.

The user which is SCHEMA_OWNER of schema "SYS_REPL" needs to give object privileges to the user that
shall be used in the new configuration.

In schema "SYS_REPL" you will find table RS_REPLICATION_COMPONENTS. The user in configuration
needs the have the authorization insert, delete, update, select on this table.

5. Specify Transfer Settings

Initial Load Mode:

You can define an Initial Load Mode if you want to use a different default reading type.

• Initial Load Mode "Resource Optimized" is the default mode and uses reading type 3 for all tables.

• Initial Load Mode "Performance Optimized" can be used if reading type 4/5 should be used for all tables.
SLT will use reading type 4 for cluster tables and reading type 5 for the other tables.

The next table discusses specific advantages and disadvantages of the discussed reading types:

Data Class of Tablespace:

Tablespace Assignment: If you choose to configure a separate log table space you can optionally supply this
information. It is possible (but not essential) to store the source system replication log tables in a separate
table space. The decision to do this or not rests with the system administrator. One advantage of having the

log tables in their own table space is that you can easily monitor the size of the log tables. As each database
system has its own method of providing this functionality, refer to your database documentation for this
procedure (also see SAP Note 46272 (/sap/support/notes/46272)).

Job Options:

Number of Data Transfer Jobs: This value specifies the number of data transfer jobs which will run in
this SAP LT Replication Server configuration to replicate the tables of the RFC connection to the SAP
HANA system.
Number of Calculation Jobs: This value specifies the number of access plan calculation jobs which will
be allocated by this configuration.

General recommendations (Number of Data Transfer Jobs): 1 Job for 10 tables, see SAP HANA SLT Sizing
Guide (https://help.sap.com/http.svc/rc/51f80c8a0c364bf2aed18522abdc5300/3.0.01/en-
US/Sizing_Guide_SAP_LT_Replication_Server.pdf):

Here is why you should reduce the number of jobs if you have too many jobs:

With every job the system is slowed down due to lock contention for the internal tables.
For every additional job there is enqueue locks.
You will get better performance with less jobs.

6. Review and Create

If you execute transaction LTR again a new configuration will be shown. Remember MT_ID (Mass Transfer ID)
for next steps.

For the SAP HANA system:

While creating a configuration, a replication user (with name equal to the schema name) will be generated
automatically. You explicitly need to grant this replication user authorization for the created database schema
using the schema-specific roles (<SCHEMA>_DATA_PROV; <SCHEMA>_POWER_USER;
<SCHEMA>_USER_ADMIN, <SCHEMA>_DATASELECT) that are available after successfully creating the
related configuration.
