1 Gloss CD Control
Gloss CD control is a control application for the gloss profiler CD control of gloss
measurement profiles. The application controls CD gloss using a moisture-increasing
actuator, e.g. steam shower. The moisture amount of the paper web is varied in CD in a
way that decreases the variation of the controlled gloss profile. The increase of steam in
any given position increases gloss in that position.
The purpose of CD gloss control is to maintain the gloss profile as close to its designated
target shape as possible by calculating new setpoints for the steam shower actuators.
There are separate operator pictures for online and offline gloss CD control.
The setpoints shown and operated in the CD control are normally in the unit of
percentage of the total capability of the actuator (0 – 100 %). A separate, hardware-
dependent, actuator interface application takes care of positioning the actuators
depending on the actuator type according to the principle illustrated in the figure below:

1.1 Main control picture for online calender


The main control picture for the controller provides information necessary to optimize the
gloss profile to reach the set target with steam shower actuators.

1.1.1 Top section of the CD control picture


 Status sheet break: ON = normal running, OFF = sheet break active
 Status grade change: ON = Grade change active, OFF = no grade change
 Status of Scanner: Scan, Offsheet, Fixpoint or Standardize
 Service picture window button for information of control disruptions and a Service
warning if active

1.1.2 Upper half of the control picture


The upper half of the control picture allows you to control the controller. It shows the
following information:

 Controller mode: Auto or Manual


 Measurement gloss profile: shows one value per actuator, i.e. it is mapped to
actuator resolution
 Gloss target profile in actuator resolution
 Measurement gloss profile: shows as many points as there are in scanner
measurement

Below the profile frame there is a binary profile that shows whether an actuator is in
Manual or Auto mode

1.1.3 Lower half of the control picture


The lower half of the picture shows the following profiles:

 Actuator setpoint profile


 Measured actuator position profile

Below the profile frame there are two binary profiles that indicate the status of the
actuators in each zone.

 Upper binary profile shows the status of an individual actuator (CONTROLLER or


LOCAL)
 Lower binary profile shows whether an individual actuator is faulty or not faulty

The numbered elements in the picture are as follows:

1. The header of CD control picture will be explained later.


2. Measurement profiles:
 Gloss profile in actuator resolution (green)
 Gloss target profile in actuator resolution (blue)
 Gloss profile in measurement resolution (brown)
3. Statistics for gloss profile: maximum, average, minimum, 2-sigma
4. Measurement profile date and time

NOTE! If a measurement profile is not valid for CD control, then the information
text is given after the interlocking picture window. The text tells the reason for
unreliability of measurement profile.

5. Control mode button: you can switch controller into Auto or Manual mode

6. Auto/Manual profile: you can switch each actuator zone into Auto or Manual
mode
7. Interlocking window button: opens Interlockings window in which you can change
the number of actuators necessary for control.

8. Use this button to set Auto/Manual profile: defines which state caliper actuator,
lower profile, enters when controller is switched into Auto mode
9. Profile scaling: maximum value, average value, minimum value
10. Actuator measurement and setpoint profile.
 When controller is in Manual mode, you can edit actuator setpoint profile
 When controller is in Auto mode, you cannot edit actuator setpoint
because it is updated by controller. In Auto mode, you can only edit those
individual actuators that are set to Manual mode.
11. Statistics for actuator measurement profile: maximum, average, minimum
12. Actuator Measurement Profile date and time
13. Actuator usability:
 green = CONTROL. Actuator is operable from this picture
 yellow = LOCAL. Actuator is operable only from the local actuator
interface
14. Actuator numbering
15. Actuator condition: status information is received from the actuator in the field
 background color = OK status; actuator can be operated
 red = fault status; actuator cannot be operated
16. DNA system/LOCAL mode switch: DNA mode or LOCAL mode. The presence of
this button on your control picture depends on the actuator system.
 Use DNA system mode when optimized control of valves is handled by
controller
 Use LOCAL mode when you wish to operate the actuator system locally,
or when the system is under maintenance.
17. Average working level of actuator setpoint:
 Average value for actuator setpoint
 Operable or not operable, depending on your application setup

1.2 Main control picture for offline calender


The main control picture provides information necessary to optimize gloss profile in order
to reach set targets via the use of steam shower actuators. In the control picture for
offline calender, the main features are identical to those described in Main Control
Picture for Online Calender. There are also additional features explained in more detail
below.

1.2.1 Top section of the CD control picture


 Status sheet break: ON = normal running, OFF = sheet break active
 Status grade change: ON = Grade change active, OFF = no grade change
 Picture window for Control Interactions
 Service picture window for information of simulation and control calculations

1.2.2 Upper section of the control picture


The upper section of the control picture allows you to control the controller. It shows the
following information:

 Controller mode: Auto or Manual


 Measurement gloss profile: shows one value per actuator, i.e. it is mapped to
actuator resolution
 Gloss target profile in actuator resolution
 Measurement gloss profile: shows a number of points equal to the number in
scanner measurement
 Below the profile frame there is a binary profile that shows whether an actuator is
in Manual or Auto mode

1.2.3 Middle section of the control picture


The middle section of the picture shows information on calender ramping during startup
and slow-down as follows:

 Target speed for startup


 Target gloss level for startup
 Run gloss level during normal running
 Ramping information (when ramping is active)

1.2.4 Lower section of the control picture


The lower section of the picture shows the following profiles:

 Actuator setpoint profile


 Measured actuator position profile

Below the profile frame there are two binary profiles that indicate the status of the
actuators in each zone:

19. Ramping status: when ramping is active, the text Active is shown

1.3 Header of CD control picture

The header of CD control picture includes the following items:


Sheet: This shows whether a relevant sheet break is active or not. When there is no
sheet break the green sheet figure is shown with the text ON. When the sheet break is
active the sheet figure with a red cross is shown with the text Break. After a sheet break,
the Sheet ON will only appear after a set number of scans have occurred. This indicates
that the web has stabilized and CD control can begin again.
Grade change: This shows when a grade change is active or not. When the grade
change is active the rising step with a yellow triangle and the text ON are shown. When
there is no grade change, the rising step and the text OFF are shown.
Scanner: This shows scanner status of the first measurement. It can be in the following
modes: scanning, Scan, offsheet from sheet, Offsheet, in fixed location on sheet,
Fixpoint, or standardizing is going on, Standardize.
After the scanner status is a service window button followed by warnings. The service
picture window shows information about what is disrupting the CD control. The next
figure shows the service picture window. It shows that simulation is active. If there is no
disruption to the CD control, the service window button and warnings will be hidden as in
the header figure above.

2 Operations

2.1 How to set target profile for controller


You can set the desired target profile for the controller in order to meet the desired
product quality target. To set the target profile, open Change Profile dialog as follows:

 In the main control picture, double-click the measurement profile window. Change
Profile dialog opens.

Change Profile dialog shows measurement and profile x-axis values. A hairline on the
profile shows the corresponding measurement point.
The numbered elements in the picture are as follows:

1. Shows a number that indicates the zone where the hairline is


2. In this field you can enter the desired target value for the zone
3. Click these buttons to move the hairline back and forth between zones
4. Click the Autostepping after Enter selection buttons to enable autostepping, i.e.
after you enter a value for the current zone and press <Enter> on your keyboard,
then you move automatically to the next zone in the selected direction.
5. After you set the target profile for all desired zones, click in the upper right
corner to close the dialog.

2.2 How to change Auto/Manual profile for controller


When controller is in Auto mode, you can set the control mode to Auto or Manual
individually for each actuator.
NOTE! If you switch many actuators from Auto to Manual mode, the number of actuators
in Auto mode may fall below the number necessary for the controller to remain in Auto
mode. In this case the controller switches to Manual mode. Refer to How to Change
Number of Actuators Necessary for Control.
To change Auto/Manual profile, open Change Profile dialog as follows:

 In the main control picture, double-click on Auto/Manual profile (marked 6 in the


figure below) on the zone you wish to change.

 A hairline appears on Auto/Manual profile. Change Profile dialog opens and


shows the number of the actuator you clicked on.

The numbered elements in the picture are as follows:

1. Shows a number that indicates the zone where the hairline is

2. In this field, click to open the drop-down menu. In the menu, select the desired
status for the zone in question
3. Click these buttons to move the hairline back and forth between zones
4. Click the Autostepping after Enter selection buttons to enable autostepping, i.e.
after you select Auto or Manual status for a zone, then you move automatically
to the next zone in the selected direction.
5. After you set Auto/Manual status for all desired zones, click in the upper right
corner to save your changes and close the dialog.

2.3 How to change a default Auto profile for controller


The default Auto profile defines which control mode individual actuators enter when
controller is switched into Auto mode.
To view the current Auto profile,

1. Click (8) by the Auto/Manual profile (6) in the main control picture.

2. Control Status dialog opens.

The dialog shows two control mode profiles:

 The upper profile shows the current Auto/Manual status


 The lower profile shows the default Auto status. This profile is copied into the
actual Auto/Manual status profile when controller is switched into Auto mode.

To edit the default Auto profile,

1. Refer to instructions in How to Change Auto/Manual profile for Controller.

2.4 How to change number of actuators necessary for


control
If there is not a sufficient number of actuators in Auto mode, i.e. when this number drops
below a predefined limit,

 Control status changes to Manual


 A red star appears in main control picture next to Interlockings button

When you see these signs, then you should check the number of actuators in Auto mode
and, if necessary, change the number of actuators necessary to keep control in Auto
mode. To do so, perform the following steps:

1. In main control picture, click Interlockings button (marked 7 here).

2. Interlockings dialog opens and shows the following information:

 Required: indicates the minimum number of functional actuators/zones


necessary to keep CD control in Auto state
 Actuators in Auto: indicates the number of actuators/zones that are
currently in Auto status
 Actuators in Control: indicates the total number of actuators/zones
available for control, i.e. you can control these remotely
 Actuators in Fault: indicates the number of actuators that have a faulty
status

To change the number of actuators necessary for control,

3. Click on the numeric value by Required. A dialog opens in which you can change
the required number of actuators.
4. In the dialog, enter the new value below the current value. Press <Enter> on your
keyboard to confirm the change.
5. Click off the dialog to close it.
6. In Interlocking dialog, click to save your changes and close the dialog.

2.5 How to set setpoint profile for actuators


You can manually change the setpoint for each actuator:

 In the bottom half of the main control picture, double-click on the actuator setpoint
profile on the zone you wish to adjust. Change Profile dialog opens.

The numbered elements in the picture are as follows:

1. Shows a number that indicates the zone where the hairline is


2. In this field, enter the desired setpoint value for the zone
3. Click these buttons to move the hairline back and forth between zones
4. Click the Autostepping after Enter selection buttons to enable autostepping, i.e.
after you enter a setpoint value for a zone, then you move automatically to the
next zone in the selected direction.
5. After you enter a setpoint value for all desired zones, click in the upper right
corner to save your changes and close the dialog.

2.6 How to change trim


1. In main control picture, click on trim value (18)

2. Trim Change dialog opens. It shows the current trim value.

3. In the dialog, enter the new value.


4. Click outside of the Change dialog to save your changes and close the dialog.

NOTE! If there are automatic trim measurements, the values are shown in Trim Change
dialog and they are not operable.

2.7 How to change actuator working level


Use this field to set the holding level for the average setpoint of the actuator. In some
application setups, it is possible that the holding level is not operable, i.e. whether it is
operable or not depends on the actuator system. If you change the average actuator
setpoint level, make the changes in steps of 1-2 % at a time to avoid creating process
disturbances.
To change the actuator working value,

1. In main control picture, click on Level value (17)

2. Change dialog opens. It shows the current actuator value

3. In the dialog, enter a new value. Press <Enter> on your keyboard to confirm the
change.
4. Click to close the dialog

2.8 How to change control usability of actuators


To change control usability, open Change Profile dialog as follows:

 In the main control picture, double click on Actuator Usability profile (marked 13 in
the figure below) on the zone you wish to change.

 A hairline appears on Actuator Usability profile. Change Profile dialog opens and
shows the number of the actuator you clicked on.

The numbered elements in the picture are as follows:

1. Shows a number that indicates the zone where the hairline is


2. In this field, click to open the drop-down menu. In the menu, select the desired
status for the zone in question
3. Click these buttons to move the hairline back and forth between zones
4. Click the Autostepping after Enter selection buttons to enable autostepping, i.e.
after you select Comp or Local status for a zone, then you move automatically to
the next zone in the selected direction.
5. After you set Comp/Local status for all desired zones, click in the upper right
corner to save your changes and close the dialog.

2.9 Operations for offline calender


The following operations are valide for offline calender:

 How to change target speed for actuator startup


 How to change target level for actuator startup
 How to change run level for actuator

2.9.1 How to change target speed for actuator startup


You can set the normal production target speed for the calender actuator startup.

1. In main control picture for offline calender, click on Target Speed value (marked
20 in the figure below)

2. Change dialog opens. It shows the current Target Speed value.

3. In the dialog, enter the new value. Press <Enter> on your keyboard to confirm the
change.
4. Click to close the dialog.

2.9.2 How to change target level for actuator startup


You can set the normal production gloss target level for the calender actuator startup.

1. In main control picture for offline calender, click on Target Level value (marked
21 in the figure below)

2. Change dialog opens. It shows the current Target Level value.

3. In the dialog, enter the new value. Press <Enter> on your keyboard to confirm the
change.
4. Click to close the dialog.

2.9.3 How to change run level for actuator


When ramping is finished, you can set the normal production working level for the
calender actuator. Change the working level if the target level is not suitable for
production.

1. In main control picture for offline calender, click on Run Level value (marked 22
in the figure below)

2. Change dialog opens. It shows the current Run Level value.

3. In the dialog, enter the new value. Press <Enter> on your keyboard to confirm the
change.
4. Click to close the dialog.

3 Other Control Pictures

3.1 Measurement Target Library Picture


Use the target library picture to save and load target profiles. The upper part of the
picture shows six memory locations in which saved profiles are stored. The lower part of
the picture shows the operation profile.

The numbered elements in the picture are as follows:

3.1.1 Profile saving location


1. Saved target profile. There are 6 saving locations
2. Enter a name or a comment for the saved target profile (max. 32 characters)
3. Click Save to save current target profile in the library.
4. Click Copy to copy a saved library profile to the pending profile. When you press
Copy, the saved library profile replaces the pending profile currently in view.
5. Span shows the span for all library profiles.

3.1.2 Operation profile


6. Operation profile shows the following three profiles:

 Current target profile in use (green)


 Pending target profile (light blue)
 Previous target profile (gray)

7. Click Flat to make a pending profile into a flat profile. A flat profile is the average
of the target profile currently in use
8. Click Undo to restore the previous profile to current profile
9. Click Load to load a pending profile to an active target profile. When you press
Load, the current target profile is saved as a previous profile
10. Use the Help ( ) button to open the Help dialog

3.2 Operations in Target Library Picture


3.2.1 How to save a profile in the library
If you wish to save the currently used target profile,

1. Choose the library memory location in which you wish to save the profile
2. Click Save by the memory location

3.2.2 How to enter a comment for the saved profile


1. Click above the desired memory location
2. Enter a comment (max. 32 characters)
3. Click off the text field to save your changes

3.2.3 How to copy from the library


If you wish to replace the current pending profile (light blue in operation profile),

1. Select the profile you wish to use


2. Click Copy by the memory location
3. Click Load to load pending profile into system

3.2.4 How to load the pending profile


You can begin using the current pending profile as the actuator target profile:

1. Click Load by the operation profile


2. The currently used target profile (green) changes to previously used target profile
(gray)

3.2.5 How to unload a profile


You can unload a loaded profile and restore the previous profile:

1. Click Undo by the operation profile


2. The previously used setpoint profile (gray) changes to currently used setpoint
profile (green)

3.2.6 How to make a pending profile flat


A flat profile is the average of the currently used target profile. To make a pending profile
flat,

1. Click Flat by the operation profile


2. Click Load to load pending profile into system

3.3 Actuator Setpoint Library Picture


Use Actuator Setpoint Library picture to save and load actuator setpoint profiles. Note
that controller must be in MANUAL mode in order to load a setpoint profile from Actuator
Setpoint Library
The upper part of the picture shows six memory locations in which saved profiles are
stored. The lower part of the picture shows the operation profile. The text Load Inhibited
in Auto is shown in the Setpoint Library picture when the control is in Auto mode. When
loading is possible, the text Load Allowed is shown.

The numbered elements in the picture are as follows:

3.3.1 Profile saving location


1. Saved setpoint profile. There are 6 saving locations
2. Enter a name or a comment for the saved setpoint profile (max. 32 characters)
3. Click Save to save current setpoints in the library
4. Click Copy to copy a saved library profile to the pending profile. When you press
Copy, the saved library profile replaces the pending profile currently in view
5. Span shows the span for all library profiles

3.3.2 Operation profile


6. Operation profile shows the following three profiles:

 Pending profile (light blue)


 Setpoint profile currently in use (green)
 Setpoint profile previously in use (gray)

7. Click Flat to make a pending profile into a flat profile. A flat profile is the average
of the setpoint profile currently in use
8. Click Undo to restore the previous profile to current profile
9. Click Load to load a pending profile to an active setpoint profile. When you press
Load, the current setpoint profile is saved as a previous profile
10. Click to open the library picture Operating Help dialog

3.4 Operations in Actuator Setpoint Library Picture


3.4.1 How to save a profile in the library
If you wish to save the currently used setpoint profile,

1. Choose the library memory location in which you wish to save the profile
2. Click Save by the memory location

3.4.2 How to enter a comment for the saved profile


1. Click above the desired memory location
2. Enter a comment (max. 32 characters)
3. Click off the text field to save your changes

3.4.3 How to copy from the library


If you wish to replace the current pending profile (light blue in operation profile),

1. Select the profile you wish to use


2. Click Copy by the memory location
3. Click Load to load pending profile into system

3.4.4 How to load the pending profile


You can begin using the current pending profile as the actuator setpoint profile:

1. Click Load by the operation profile


2. The currently used setpoint profile (green) changes to previously used setpoint
profile (gray)

3.4.5 How to unload a profile


You can unload a loaded profile and restore the previous profile:

1. Click Undo by the operation profile


2. The previously used setpoint profile (gray) changes to currently used setpoint
profile (green)

3.4.6 How to make a pending profile flat


A flat profile is the average of the currently used setpoint profile. To make a pending
profile flat,

1. Click Flat by the operation profile.


2. Click Load to load pending profile into system
