1 Gloss CD Control
Gloss CD control is a control application for the gloss profiler CD control of gloss
measurement profiles. The application controls CD gloss using a moisture-increasing
actuator, e.g. steam shower. The moisture amount of the paper web is varied in CD in a
way that decreases the variation of the controlled gloss profile. The increase of steam in
any given position increases gloss in that position.
The purpose of CD gloss control is to maintain the gloss profile as close to its designated
target shape as possible by calculating new setpoints for the steam shower actuators.
There are separate operator pictures for online and offline gloss CD control.
The setpoints shown and operated in the CD control are normally in the unit of
percentage of the total capability of the actuator (0 – 100 %). A separate, hardware-
dependent, actuator interface application takes care of positioning the actuators
depending on the actuator type according to the principle illustrated in the figure below:

Below the profile frame there is a binary profile that shows whether an actuator is in
Manual or Auto mode
Below the profile frame there are two binary profiles that indicate the status of the
actuators in each zone.

NOTE! If a measurement profile is not valid for CD control, then the information
text is given after the interlocking picture window. The text tells the reason for
unreliability of measurement profile.
5. Control mode button: you can switch controller into Auto or Manual mode
6. Auto/Manual profile: you can switch each actuator zone into Auto or Manual
mode
7. Interlocking window button: opens Interlockings window in which you can change
the number of actuators necessary for control.
7

8. Use this button to set Auto/Manual profile: defines which state caliper actuator,
lower profile, enters when controller is switched into Auto mode
9. Profile scaling: maximum value, average value, minimum value
10. Actuator measurement and setpoint profile.
When controller is in Manual mode, you can edit actuator setpoint profile
When controller is in Auto mode, you cannot edit actuator setpoint
because it is updated by controller. In Auto mode, you can only edit those
individual actuators that are set to Manual mode.
11. Statistics for actuator measurement profile: maximum, average, minimum
12. Actuator Measurement Profile date and time
13. Actuator usability:
green = CONTROL. Actuator is operable from this picture
yellow = LOCAL. Actuator is operable only from the local actuator
interface
14. Actuator numbering
15. Actuator condition: status information is received from the actuator in the field
background color = OK status; actuator can be operated
red = fault status; actuator cannot be operated
16. DNA system/LOCAL mode switch: DNA mode or LOCAL mode. The presence of
this button on your control picture depends on the actuator system.
Use DNA system mode when optimized control of valves is handled by
controller
Use LOCAL mode when you wish to operate the actuator system locally,
or when the system is under maintenance.
17. Average working level of actuator setpoint:
Average value for actuator setpoint
Operable or not operable, depending on your application setup
18. Front and back trim positions

Below the profile frame there are two binary profiles that indicate the status of the
actuators in each zone:

19. Ramping status: when ramping is active, the text Active is shown
20. Target Speed shows the desired actuator startup speed
21. Target Level shows the desired actuator startup gloss level
22. Run Level shows the normal production gloss level

2 Operations
In the main control picture, double-click the measurement profile window. Change
Profile dialog opens.
Change Profile dialog shows measurement and profile x-axis values. A hairline on the
profile shows the corresponding measurement point.
The numbered elements in the picture are as follows:

2. In this field, click to open the drop-down menu. In the menu, select the desired
status for the zone in question
3. Click these buttons to move the hairline back and forth between zones
4. Click the Autostepping after Enter selection buttons to enable autostepping, i.e.
after you select Auto or Manual status for a zone, then you move automatically
to the next zone in the selected direction.
5. After you set Auto/Manual status for all desired zones, click in the upper right
corner to save your changes and close the dialog.
1. Click (8) by the Auto/Manual profile (6) in the main control picture.
14

When you see these signs, then you should check the number of actuators in Auto mode
and, if necessary, change the number of actuators necessary to keep control in Auto
mode. To do so, perform the following steps:
15

3. Click on the numeric value by Required. A dialog opens in which you can change
the required number of actuators.
4. In the dialog, enter the new value below the current value. Press <Enter> on your
keyboard to confirm the change.
5. Click off the dialog to close it.
6. In Interlocking dialog, click to save your changes and close the dialog.
In the bottom half of the main control picture, double-click on the actuator setpoint
profile on the zone you wish to adjust. Change Profile dialog opens.

NOTE! If there are automatic trim measurements, the values are shown in Trim Change
dialog and they are not operable.

In the main control picture, double click on Actuator Usability profile (marked 13 in
the figure below) on the zone you wish to change.
A hairline appears on Actuator Usability profile. Change Profile dialog opens and
shows the number of the actuator you clicked on.
