Evolutionary algorithms, especially genetic algorithms, are effective in optimizing system designs across various engineering fields, including microprocessors. Studies have shown that these algorithms can yield energy-efficient circuit layouts and improve cache memory design by balancing speed and energy efficiency. Overall, EAs provide a powerful alternative to traditional optimization techniques in design optimization.

Evolutionary Algorithms in Design Optimization

Evolutionary algorithms (EAs), particularly genetic algorithms (GAs), have

been employed in various engineering domains to optimize system
designs. For microprocessors, GAs have been applied to optimize circuit
layouts, power consumption, and overall efficiency. Previous studies have
shown that evolutionary strategies can efficiently explore design spaces,
converging on high-performance solutions that are often difficult to
identify using conventional optimization methods.

Benedetti et al. (2005) demonstrated that evolutionary algorithms applied

to the design of microprocessor circuits led to energy-efficient layouts
without significant performance loss.

Lau et al. (2010) showed that EAs applied to cache memory design
produced systems with a better trade-off between speed and energy
efficiency than conventional design methods.
