Course Description:
The Computer Applications is a one semester course composed of instructional modules designed to provide
hands-on instruction in basic keyboarding skills, computer concepts, and software applications. The goal of this
course is to provide all middle school students with an introduction to the principles of computer science, basic
keyboarding skills, Internet safety and usage, and computer applications. Software applications include word
processing, desktop publishing, presentation software, spreadsheets, and databases. Kansas College and Career
Ready Employability Skills introduced in English, language arts and mathematics are reinforced in assigned
projects.

Learning Expectations:
Students will be expected to use different types of application software, gain basic research knowledge, and
improve keyboarding techniques. Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following student learning
expectations:

 Read purposefully
 Communicate effectively
 Identify, analyze and solve problems
 Work independently and cooperatively with others

Student’s Academic Responsibilities:


Class participation is the key to success in a computer skills and application class. It is necessary for students to
attend every class session. Upon entering the class, students are required to check for daily activities and record
assignments in their agendas. The student is responsible for completing daily assignments and assigned
homework. Students are responsible for requesting missed assignment(s) as a result of excused absences.

Grading
Students will be assessed on keyboarding skill lessons, activities, and projects. Grades will be posted on
Skyward weekly.

What do I need for this course? Each student will need paper, pen or pencil, and Chromebook. Ear buds or
headphones are recommended.

Will there be homework in this course? There is typically no homework and all of your work should be
completed during class time. A student may require additional time outside of class to practice and work on an
assignment because of absences or project complexity.

Listen to Instructions
1. Use active listening skills
2. Remove headsets and ear buds during direct instructions and only one ear piece when working
independently.
3. Raise your hand, stay in your seat, and wait to be recognized

Enter and Exit Prepared


1. Be in your seat and logged onto your computer before the bell rings.
2. Be prepared for class (bring pencils, paper, notebook, etc.)
3. When entering classroom, check for daily assignments and weekly goals.
4. Food, drinks, candy, and chewing gum are NOT ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM.
5. Sit at your assigned seats at all times

Always Try Your Best


1. Stay on task and focused on classroom goals.
2. Manage your time.
3. Access to music is available to students who have completed Unit 1.

Respect Yourself and Others


1. Profanity will not be tolerated
2. Be mindful and respectful to others
3. Express tolerance. Each student learns differently. Learn to value other students for their
differences.

No Excuses
1. Complete all assignments on time
2. Use only approved web sites.
3. Take responsibility for your actions

Computer Lab Rules:

1) NO FOOD OR DRINKS PERMITTED IN LAB


2) NO electronic devices used during direct instructional times
3) Destroying school property is prohibited.
