ELC 101 Learning Episode 5
ELC 101 Learning Episode 5
This learning Episode provides an opportunity to examine how classrooms are structured or designed
to allow everyone’s maximum participation for effective learning. You should be able to examine how
classroom management practices affect learning. This Episode enhances the application of the theories
learned in the following professional subject such as Facilitating Learner-Centered Teaching and The Child
and Adolescent Learners and Learning Principles.
The classroom climate that is conducive for learning is one that is non-threatening yet business-like. It
is a classroom where, when creating audio-visual presentations, the following are observed:
Specific classroom rules and procedures are clear.
Classroom rules and procedures are discussed within the first few days of the school.
Students are involved in the design of rules and procedures.
Techniques to acknowledge and reinforce acceptable behavior are employed.
Clear limits for unacceptable behavior are established and negative consequences for such are
communicated.
Classroom processes are democratic.

OBSERVE, ANALYZE, REFLECT
OBSERVE
Observe and use the observation sheet provided for you to document your observations.
1. As you observe the class, look into the characteristics of the learners. Note their ages.
The students in Grade 7 – Section Jade are around 11-12 years old. Some of the students are too small
for their height and look like elementary students, however, there are also those who are tall enough for
their age.
3. Focus on their behavior, are they already able to manage their own behavior?
During our first day in observation, the students were very well-behaved as they welcomed and
greeted me in a pleasant way. However, as time went by, their childish attitude started to come out.
There are some students especially boys are throwing paper balls while waiting for their subject teacher,
some are talking with their seatmates as well as playing mobile games. Some students don’t want to
write concept notes and just want to disturb their classmates while writing. Some students go to CR
from time to time since the CR is just beside their classroom and even go together with their friends.
Aside from that, some students excused themselves from the class just to go to the CR, but the truth is
they just go to the canteen and buy some food. Most of all, few students easily get mad and tend to get
violent and aggressive specifically Tagoranao, Diamaoden, and Paporo. Lastly, even though they are in
the second section out of 4 sections in Grade 7 they still can’t manage their behavior even if the teacher
warns them or becomes annoyed and frustrated. The only thing that makes them behave is when the
teacher warns them that they will get a demerit, and they already know the consequences of it.
ANALYZE
Analyze and answer these questions on observe pleasure management practices. It is also good to ask the
teacher for additional information, so you can validate your observation. Write your notes below and then
organize your data in the Table that follows.
FIELD STUDY 1 2
1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes (storage for teaching aids, books, students’
belongings, supplies, etc.)? Describe these areas. Will it make a difference if these areas for specific
purposes are not present?
Yes, the classroom has storage for teaching aids where the teacher can put all his educational
materials or IMs as well as all the students’ output, quizzes and students’ files and exam papers. This
area is good for advisers to arrange and secure the mentioned things. This is important to be there
for the preparedness and readiness of the teacher when needed while teaching. It is part of the
adviser’s table since the table has a small cabinet included in it. They also have a black divider
storage but there is nothing that is being placed. Also, they have a student storage aid where they
can put their belongings such as books, notebooks, and other activities. The cleaning supplies are
also located at the back of the door at the front, and it is somehow disarranged and there’s a lot of
garbage there. Also, there is a shoe rack outside the classroom where the students can place their
shoes/sandals since they are not allowed to wear their shoes inside the classroom.
2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room? List them down. Do these rules reinforce positive
behavior?
There were no rules and procedures posted inside the classroom but there were different rules
that were being imposed by the subject teacher. Just like Ma’am Skye, who discussed her four (4)
rules with the students during her class session. The first one is not using cell phones or any gadgets
during class, if someone is caught it will be confiscated, and she will give it to the principal. Second,
no saying bad words or any bad gestures. Third, respect yourself before you respect other people.
Lastly, they will only meet once a week so every meeting they will have a quiz. Aside from Ma’am
Skye, Ma’am Yosh also has rules. The first one is, “Do not talk unless you get permission”. Second,
ask permission first before going out. Lastly, sleeping in class is strictly prohibited. These rules
reinforce positive behavior in a way that the students follow these rules to avoid getting demerits or
facing any consequences.
3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules? If the Resource Teacher is available, ask
him/her to describe the process. What's the effect of students’ participation in rule-making on
student’s behavior?
The students didn’t participate in making the classroom rules since the resource teacher already
created rules by themselves and only informed and discussed with the students what these rules
are. However, I believe that students’ participation in rulemaking has an impact on the student’s
behavior. Through this process, they would be able to know and be aware of what are the rewards
and consequences if they will or will not follow these rules. Also, it helps them to be accountable for
the decisions they make as well as develops a deep sense of orderliness in their actions and
manners.
4. What are the daily routines done by the Resource Teacher? (prayer, attendance, assignment of
monitors, warm-up activities, etc.) How are they done?
Few teachers regularly exercise classroom praying and the attendance is done mostly through roll-
calling of their names (last name basis). However, one of the resource teachers we have observed
who has daily routines is Ma’am Skye, who is their Elective teacher. Ma’am Skye started her daily
routines by letting the students arrange first their chairs and finish their food since their class is after
recess. After that, there is greetings, attendance, and asking questions to the students about what
their previous lessons was is all about. Since one of her rules is they will have a quiz, she then let the
students get their concept notes and have a quiz. Their quizzes are more on correct grammar and
spelling quizzes. After the quiz, they will check it to write away and Ma’am Skye will call the names
of the students who will answer and of course, check their answers if it is correct or wrong. She is
also very strict and very articulate when it comes to her rules.
5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis of this arrangement? Does this help in managing
the class?
Yes, their class adviser administers their seating arrangements. Mostly those who were shorter
students’ seat in the front and those who are taller at the back. The class are divided into two
columns and the seating arrangements are a combination of two boy and two girls. Through this
seating arrangement those are shorter can easily saw what is written in the blackboard however
there are still students who didn’t follows their seating arrangement.
FIELD STUDY 1 3
6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?
Most of the teacher’s concerns regarding the Grade 7 – Jade students is their level of noisiness
causing most of the teachers being frustrated and annoyed. That is, even if the teacher warns them,
they only behave and silent for a few minutes after that they get very noisy again. That is why one of
our resource teachers said that they are the worst sections even though they are in the 2nd section
and the only thing that they fear-off is getting a demerits and also part pf their grading system is
attitude.
7. If a learner is not following instruction or is off-task, what does the Resource Teacher do? Describe
the behavior strategies used.
If the learner is not following instructions or is off task, the Resource Teacher is always there to
remind the learner of the instructions and guide them on what are the things they need to know.
However, there are also some teachers who are very strict when it comes to their instructions that if
the student doesn’t follow they will get a deductions. One good example is Ma’am Skye who is very
strict when it comes to following instructions and even deduct those students who didn’t follow.
8. What does the Resource Teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors? (behavior strategies)
Most of the teachers have different ways to reinforce positive behaviors. One of these is Sir Beazar
who is very strict and somehow the students are scared of him especially during oral recitation. That
is why students are eager to study for them to be able to answer during oral or discussion. Aside
from him, Ma’am Asia is very particular in giving demerits for misbehaving students. Also, Sir Ibra,
who is somehow strict, gets angry and scolds the students for being noisy but after that the students
behave. Lastly, their class adviser is very patient to his students and makes the class more
interactive and engaging as well as gives encouragement.

ANALYZE
1. How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learners’ behavior?
Classroom organization and routine have a favorable impact on student's behavior by
making them more responsible and assisting them in better managing their learning. It also
boosts their self-esteem, regulates their behavior, and fosters positive classroom
relationships. Students may also be able to gain self-control, which will lower their chances of
failing their subjects.
2. What should the teacher have in mind when she/he designs the classroom organization and routines?
What theories and principles should you have in mind?
As a teacher, there are a lot of things you need to consider in designing classroom procedures
and routines. First, you need to be prepared and plan all the activities for the day with the
allotted time. In creating the classroom rules, it must be democratic (based on democratic
theory) where students are included and can suggest any rules. Also, as a teacher, you must
consider the learning capabilities of your students and utilize activities that suit their learning
styles. Most of all, keeping detailed records of student activities, attendance, and
assignments is essential for providing valuable insights into student progress and
demonstrating effective classroom management
3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the learners? In motivating
students? Why were they effective?
Here are some behavioral strategies that teachers can employ to effectively manage
student behavior or motivate them. First, set up a new learner-centered classroom
atmosphere where students can be more independent and self-reliant. Second, develop
classroom rules that students can follow and effectively reinforce teaching routines and
procedures. Fourth, reward them for good work by recognizing and praising their efforts. This
will not only motivate them, but it will also help them sustain their good behavior. Lastly, to
help all types of learners, use a wide range of resources, materials, techniques, and strategies
in the classroom.
REFLECT
1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade year level do you see yourself?
What routines and procedures would you consider for this level, why?
I can picture myself teaching Grade 9 or 10 students in Science subjects. These students
are more mature enough, so it won’t be hard for me to remind them of my classroom rules. I
shall begin my lesson with a prayer, which is very important to me. Following that, I'll ask
them how well they're doing, if they're happy, how they feel about our subject, and so on.
These questions will help me determine the present state of my students' learning in my
classes. If they ever told me how they felt about learning my subject, I could quickly figure
out what strategies I needed to implement to meet their needs. Then there are the standard
procedures such as attendance, motivational activities, and genuine discussion with regular
questioning to ensure comprehension.
FIELD STUDY 1 6
2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level. Why would you choose these rules?
1.LINK to Practice
Maintain cleanliness.
2. Observe orderliness.
3. Raise your right hand when you have questions/concerns.
4. No use of gadgets except when the teacher permits.
5. Participate in all the activities.
6. Ask permission before you go out
I chose the basic classroom rules because these are the usual rules I observed from my
RTs and it is kind of effective.
3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?
Students should be involved in the creation of classroom rules in order to help them
develop leadership abilities and understand the importance of taking responsibility for their
own actions and behavior. It also allows students and teachers to work together to agree on
the rules that must be established.
Read the items given below and encircle the correct answer.
1. Focusing on natural consequences of students’ behavior develops more self-regulation in the students.
Which of the following teacher statements demonstrates focusing on natural consequences?
A. “Those who were noisy today during seatwork will not be allowed to play games in the
computer later.”
B. “If it takes you longer to finish the seatwork because time is wasted with chatting, then
we won’t have time to go to the playground anymore.”
C. “Those who are well-behaved in class will be given plus 5 points in the quiz.”
D. If you get a grade of 95 or higher in the first two assignments, you will be exempted from
the 3rd assignment.
2. Learners are more likely to internalize and follow classroom rules when _______________.
A. The teacher clearly explains the rules she prepared
B. The learners know the punishment for not following the rules
C. The learners participate in the rule-making process
D. The teacher gives additional points for those who follow the rules
3. For a teacher to establish and maintain consistent standards of learners’ behavior, they should do all
EXCEPT ______________________.
A. give immediate feedback to reinforce appropriate behavior of learners
B. be open to exceptions each time a learner misbehaves in class
C. communicate and enforce school policies and procedures clearly and consistently
D. handle behavior problems promptly and with due respect to learners’ rights
