F4 Chapter 1 Part 1

Chapter 1 of the Additional Mathematics textbook focuses on functions, defining them as relations where each element in set X is mapped to one element in set Y. It covers determining the domain and range of both discrete and continuous functions, as well as the Vertical Line Test to identify functions from graphs. The chapter also introduces composite functions, explaining how two functions can combine to create a new function.

Chapter 1 :Functions
fORM 4
1.1 Functions

Function relating set X to set Y is a special relation where each element x ∈

X is mapped to one and only one element y ∈ Y.
(each element x in set X is mapped to one and only one element in set Y)

Determining the domain and range of a function

Vertical Line Test

Use Vertical Line test - determine whether the given graph is a function of
otherwise.
If the vertical line only cuts only one point on the graph, then the relation is a
function.
Graph is not a function - vertical line does not cut the graph at any point or
cuts more than one point.

Absolute Value Function

Also known as the modulus function
Has non-negative values, the range is all real numbers except negative numbers
The graph of an absolute value function is always 'V- shaped
Examples :

1. State whether each of the following is a function. State your reason.

2. Determine the domain, codomain and range of the following

functions.
Determine the image of the function when the object is given and vice versa

Composite Functions

Composite function is is an operation where two functions say f and g

generate a new function say h in such a way that h(x) = g(f(x)).
