COMPUTER SYSTEM SERVICING

Quarter # – Semester #

MODULE 1 – Quick Summary

COMPUTER - is a device that manipulates "data." It can store, retrieve, and process data.

Two essential parts of a computer:

• HARDWARE - any part of your computer with a physical structure (Tangible).
• SOFTWARE- is any set of instructions program that a computer uses. (Ex. excel,
mobile legends, Microsoft Word)

Different types of computer:

• Laptop
• Server

Other types of computers:

• Tablet Computer • Mobile Phone
• Smart TV • Smart Watch
• Game Console • VR Headset

Two main styles of pc:

• Pc (presented in 1981)
• Mac (presented in 1984)

Basic components of a desktop computer:

• SYSTEM UNIT - the core of a computer system because it has the core (acts as the
brain) and memory.
• MOUSE - It is an input device to interact with items on your computer screen.
• MONITOR - It is an output device that displays video images and text.

Different types of monitor:

• CRT (cathode ray tube)
• LCD (liquid crystal display)
• Quantum dot LED (Light emitting diode)
• OLED (Organic light emitting diode)
• LED (Light emitting diode)

KEYBOARD - is an input device that use to enter information into your computer.
SPEAKER - is an output device used to play sound.
PRINTER - It is an output device that takes the data stored on a computer or other device and
generates a printed copy of it.

Different types of printer:

• 3D Printer • Dot Matrix
• All in one Printer • Inkjet Printer
• Laser Printer

INTERNAL HARDWARE
• MOTHERBOARD - serves as the central backbone of the computer because some
essential parts are attached to It (processor, memory)
• Central Processing Unit (CPU) - serves as the brain because the CPU processes the
instructions of a computer.
• APU (accelerated processing unit) - it has the ability to boost the processing ability.
• RAM (Random access memory) - is used to store and retrieve data but is volatile
since it needs power to keep the data.

Main types of memory:

• SIMM (Single in-line memory module)

• DIMM (Dual in-line memory module)
• SDRAM DIMM (Synchronous dynamic random-access memory Dual in-line memory
module) RDRAM (Rambus dynamic random-access memory)
• DDR SDRAM (Double data rate SDRAM)

• HDD (Hard disk drive) - non-volatile data storage since even if you turn off your
computer the data won’t disappear.
• PSU (power supply unit) - Used to power your computer and its components.

Power supply form factors:

• Berg
• Molex
• SATA
• 24 PIN ATX (Advance technology attachment)
• 4PIN ATX
• PCI-e (peripheral component interconnect - express)

GRAPHICS CARD - it generates a feed of output images to a display monitor.

Types of graphics cards:

• PCI (peripheral component interconnect)
• AGP (accelerated graphics port)
• PCI-e (peripheral component interconnect-express)

What’s on the card?

• DisplayPort
• HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface)
• DVI (digital visual interface)
• Analog d-sub

I/O Ports:
• Ps2 keyboard and mouse
• Serial port
• Parallel/printer port
• USB (Universal Serial bus)
• Firewire
• Audio/game port
• Ethernet port

MODULE 5 – Quick Summary

INPUT DEVICE
an input device is any piece of computer hardware used to send data into a computer

Commonly used input devices:

1. Keyboard 4. Touch-screen enabled devices

2. Mouse 5. Scanner
3. Microphone 6. Barcode scanner

OUTPUT DEVICE
An output device is any type of computer hardware used as a medium that converts
electronically generated information into human-readable form.

Output devices:

1. Monitor 4. Printer
2. Speaker 5. Projector
3. Headphones

Two main storage

Primary: is also known as main storage or memory (RAM)
Secondary: Referred to as external memory and secondary storage (HDD).

Hard disk drive vs. Solid state drive

Meanwhile, a hard drive uses a mechanical arm with a read/write head to move around and
read information from the right location on a storage platter.

1. ODD (OPTICAL DISC DRIVE)

2. CDs - tend to be used for large files (but smaller than 1Gb) that are too big for a floppy
disc to hold such as music and general animation.
3. DVDs - are used to hold very large files (several GB) such as movie films.
4. CD ROM/DVD ROM - Applications that require the prevention of deletion of data,
accidental or otherwise.
5. CD R/DVD R - Applications which require a single ‘burning’ of data, e.g. CDs -
recording of music downloads from the internet,
6. CD RW/DVD RW - Applications that require the updating of information and the ability
to record over old data.

USB FLASH DRIVES

Are typically removable and rewritable, much smaller than floppy ones. Storage capacities
typically range from 2 GB to 128 GB.

FLASH MEMORY CARDS

A memory card or flash memory card is a solid-state electronic flash memory data storage
device with digital cameras.

EXTERNAL/PORTABLE HARD DISKS

are fun because you can carry data everywhere and transfer information between computers.

CLOUD STORAGE
It is a networked storage model where data is not stored in the user's computer.

Two types of cloud storage: Network-attached storage (NAS)

Is file-level computer data storage connected to a computer
• Dropbox network providing data access to a heterogeneous group
• Google Drive of clients.
