PRACTICAL NO.

: 4 RESISTANCES IN SERIES AND PARALLEL

Aim:
1. To study the effect of Resistances connected in series on potentialdifference
(V), current (I) and total resistance.
2. To study the effect of Resistances connected in parallel on potentialdifference
(V), current (I) and total resistance.

Apparatus: Voltmeter, Miliameter, Resistances, Rheostat, Battery, ConnectingWires

1. Current passing through resistance:

2. Total Resistance for series connection:

Procedure:
➢ Interpret circuit diagram and identify components of it.
➢ Prepare circuit as per circuit diagram and check the connections beforeswitching it
on.

➢ Adjust circuit for the first resistance Note the value of current ( I)andpotential
difference (V) in ammeter and voltmeter respectively.
➢ Now connect the second resistance in series and note down the
corresponding reading on ammeter and voltmeter.
➢ Repeat above steps for other three readings.
➢ Calculate the resistance value from the table.
➢ Calculate the value of total resistance from given formula 2 and 3.
➢ Compare the experimental and calculated value of R and conclude theresult.
