Latitude and Longitude

1. Equator

The Equator is located at 0° (Zero degrees) Latitudes.

It is divided Earth into Northern and Southern Hemisphere.

North of Equator have latitude between 0 ° to 90 ° (North Pole)

South of the Equator have latitude between 0° to 90 ° (South Pole)

2. Facts about Longitude

Lines of the longitudes are also known as meridians of longitudes.

Lines of the longitudes are equal in length

Lines of the longitude are halves of great circles

Lines of the longitudes are the farthest apart at the equator.

Lines of the longitudes intercept at the North Pole and the South Pole.

3. Arctic and Antarctic Circle

Arctic (60° North) and Antarctic Circle (66° 30´South) are also known as referred to as the Polar
Circles.

4. Tropic of cancer

It is an imaginary line of latitude circling the earth at approximately 23.5 ° North of Equator. It passes
through Hawaii, Northern Africa and Kolkata, India.

5. Prime meridian

Prime meridian divided earth into eastern and western Hemisphere.

Earth’s Longitude measures 360° and Prime meridian is at 0° longitude.


6. Equinoxes

On 21st March and September 23nd direct rays of the Sun fall to an Equator, So the Whole earth
experience equal days and equal nights. This is called Equinoxes.

7. Tropic of Capricorn

It is an imaginary line of latitude circling the earth at approximately latitude 23.5° south of the
Equator.
