Exercise 6

Submit your answers by Monday 30.10.2017 at 14:15. You should return your solutions via
MyCourses. The main assistant of this exercise is Sannamari Pilpola.

Information:
 RETScreen is available at http://www.retscreen.net. The current version, RETScreen Expert,
is available free-of-charge only for viewing, but it is suitable for this exercise. The size of
the installation program is 193 MB.
 You can also use the older version, RETScreen 4, which can be found at the computers in
A046 (main building, A-wing, basement).
 If RETScreen is not working on your computer, you can ask for an alternative way to do the
homework. In this case, please contact the course assistants (by email).
 We encourage you to do group work in case you don’t have access to RETScreen yourself
(but remember: No copy-paste solutions!)

Homework

Make a new RETScreen project with the following settings:

Project type Power

Technology Wind turbine
Grid type* Central-grid & internal load
Analysis type* Method 1
Heating value reference* Lower heating value (LHV)
Climate data location Helsinki/Vantaa
Power gross average load* 0 kW each month
System peak electricity load over max monthly 0%
average*
Electricity rate 0.050 €/kWh
Wind turbine
Power capacity 2 500 kW
Capacity factor 30%
Operating strategy – base load power system
Electricity export rate* 50 €/MWh
Electricity rate – proposed case* 50 €/MWh
Operating strategy Full power capacity output
Financial analysis
Initial costs 1400 €/kW × Power capacity
Other costs, incentives, grants 0€
O&M costs 4 % of the initial costs
Inflation rate 3%
Project life 25 years
Debt ratio 90%
Debt interest rate 8%
Debt term 10 years
*) Not applicable in RETScreen Expert, only in RETScreen 4
Attach the cumulative cash flow graph to your submission (e.g., print screen).

I. Explain the shape of the graph.

a. The curve is decreasing during years 0-10.
What is happening during this time period?
b. The curve starts increasing at the beginning of year 11. Why?
c. What happens in the 19th year?
II. If we wish to have an equity payback period of 15 years instead:
a. What should the inflation rate be?
b. What should the electricity rate be in the beginning?
c. What should the debt ratio be?

What do think about the feasibility of wind power in Finland based on the assumptions and results
(equity payback, IRR) of this exercise? (max 100 words)
