Introduction

Fast Fourier Transform (FFT)


Definition and Importance
The Fourier Transform converts a signal from the time domain to the frequency
domain, allowing us to analyze its frequency components. However, the
Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), which is used in digital systems, has high
computational complexity O(N²). The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is an
optimized algorithm that reduces this complexity to O(N log N), making it
suitable for real-time applications.
Mathematical Representation
The DFT of a discrete signal x[n] of length N is given by:

where k represents the frequency index.


The FFT computes the same result using divide-and-conquer strategies,
significantly reducing the number of multiplications and additions required.
Types of FFT Algorithms
1. Radix-2 FFT:
o The most widely used FFT algorithm, where N (number of points)
is a power of 2.
o Uses a divide-and-conquer approach to break down DFT
computations into smaller parts, reducing complexity from O(N²) to

Windowing Techniques in FIR Filter Design
Windowing techniques are used in Finite Impulse Response (FIR)
filter design to control spectral leakage and improve filter
performance. Common window functions include:
1. Hamming Window:
o Provides a good balance between main lobe width and side lobe
attenuation.
o Defined as:

2. Hanning (Hann) Window:

side lobe attenuation.
