Hello!

Professor and Class,

Part One: Introduction

Hello everyone, my name is Rodney Ivery. I am 53 years old, a father to a 23-year-old

son, and currently reside in Virginia, about 20 minutes from Washington, D.C. I am a former

Army service member, with my last duty station being Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Now, I

work as a shooting instructor, teaching 4 to 6 classes per week.

I am pursuing my Bachelor's degree in Business Management with a concentration in

Project Management. I’ve been in school for almost two years without taking a break,

ensuring I stay on track toward my goals. This course will help me gain the business skills

necessary to open and manage my own shooting range.

Outside of school and work, I enjoy coaching football, which I’ve done for over 15

years. If I had a free weekend, I’d spend it at the range or coaching.

Part Two: Ideal Parenting Style

My ideal parenting style aligns with authoritative parenting, which research identifies

as the most effective approach for fostering independence and responsibility. Longmire

(2024) defines authoritative parenting as balancing high expectations with warmth and

support, leading to better social, emotional, and academic outcomes in children.

Studies show that children raised with authoritative parenting tend to have higher self-

esteem, better problem-solving skills, and stronger emotional regulation (Elshanum, 2024).

Unlike authoritarian parenting, which is overly strict, or permissive parenting, which lacks

structure, authoritative parenting provides clear rules while encouraging open

communication.

Even as a coach, I see the benefits of this approach. Young athletes thrive when given

clear guidelines but also feel supported and heard. As a father, I’ve applied this balance,

allowing my son to develop independence while knowing he had guidance when needed.
Regards,

Rodney Ivery
