Probability Assignment 1

This document is an assignment for the Probability and Stochastic Process course at the Indian Institute of Technology Jammu. It includes various problems related to probability definitions, independent events, random experiments, and calculations involving dice, coins, and urns. The assignment challenges students to apply theoretical concepts to practical scenarios in probability.

Probability and Stochastic Process (MA-210-(TO))

Assignment 1

1. Let Ω be the set of all nonnegative integers and F the class of all subsets of Ω. In each of
the following cases, does P defines a probability on F?

(a) For A ∈ F, let

e−λ λ x
P(A) = ∑ , (λ > 0).
x∈A x!

(b) For A ∈ F, let

P(A) = ∑ p(1 − p)x , (0 < p < 1).

x∈A

(c) For A ∈ F, let

(
1, if A has a finite number of elements
P(A) =
0, otherwise.

2. Let A and B be two independent events. Show that

(a) A and Bc are independent, and

(b) Ac and Bc are independent.

3. If A1 , A2 and A3 are mutually independent, show that A1 and A2 ∩ Ac3 are independent.

4. Give an example of a random experiment consisting of events A1 , A2 and A3 such that

P(A1 ∩ A2 ∩ A3 ) = P(A1 )P(A2 )P(A3 ) but A1 , A2 and A3 are not mutually independent.

5. Find the minimum number of times a fair die has to be thrown such that the probability
of getting no six is less than 1/2.

6. A fair coin is tossed (m + n) times successively. Show that the probability of exactly a
n+3
run of m heads is m+2 .

7. You enter a chess tournament where your probability of winning a game is 0.3 against
half the players (call them type 1), 0.4 against a quarter of the players (call them type 2),
and 0.5 against the remaining quarter of the players (call them type 3). You play a game
against a randomly chosen opponent. What is the probability of winning?

8. Three urn contain one white and two black balls; two white and one black ball; and two
white and two black balls respectively. One ball is transferred from the first to the second
urn and then one ball is transferred from second to the third. Finally one ball is drawn
from the third urn. Find the probability of the ball drawn from the third urn to be white.

9. We roll a fair four-sided die. If the result is 1 or 2, we roll once more but otherwise, we
stop. What is the probability that the sum total of our rolls is at least 4?

10. Suppose an urn contains a white balls and b black balls. Apart from their color, they are
identical. One ball is chosen randomly from this urn and its color is noted. It is now
kept in the urn together with c extra balls of the same color as the ball drawn. Find the
probability of drawing a white ball after n successive operations. Find also the probability
of having a succession of all black balls drawn after n operations.
