Instructions:
1. No late submission is allowed.
2. Copied/identical submissions will be graded as 0 for all parties concerned.

1. A LED lighting system is shown in Fig. 1 which includes a backup circuit ‘A’. The LED light turns OFF when the output of backup
circuit goes below 3V. Backup circuit is capable to keep the LED ‘ON’ only if the power failure occurs for 20ms or less.
i) Draw the electrical circuit diagram of the backup circuit ‘A’ using only passive components R,L and C. Consider that the switch is
closed for 35ms when the backup circuit ‘A’ can generate an output as given in fig. 1. The values of C and L can’t exceed 1000µF and
100mH respectively. Diagram should be properly labelled, and all values must be clearly visible.
ii) What is the value of Rn that provides 20ms backup to keep the LED ‘ON’ when switch is open after 35ms? Draw the transient
response of the backup circuit when switch will be kept open for more than 20ms. Identify the region on the plot when LED remains
ON.
iii) What changes you may make in your backup circuit ‘A’ if the LED is needed to be ON for 40ms when switch remains open?
Mathematically analyze your answer.
𝑅
iv) Draw the transient response of the backup circuit if the Rn value is reduced to 𝑛 . Compare this plot with the plot of question (ii).
2
Explain how new Rn affects circuit operation if power failure occurs for 20ms.
