Difference Between Switchings and TDM-FDM

The document outlines the differences between circuit switching and packet switching, highlighting their operational phases, data processing methods, reliability, and resource management. It also compares Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) and Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM), detailing their signal types, conflict levels, efficiency, and requirements for synchronization and guard bands. Overall, the document provides a clear distinction between these networking concepts.

Difference between TDM and FDM
Prerequisite – Frequency division and Time division multiplexing
Time Division Multiplexing (TDM):
TDM is the multiplexing technique. TDM works with digital signals likewise as analog
signals. In TDM, synchronization pulse is important. TDM share the timescale for the
various signals. It have two types:
1. Synchronous TDM
2. Asynchronous TDM

Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM):

FDM is the multiplexing technique which is used in analog system. In FDM, Guard band
is required and the spectral efficiency of FDM is low. In FDM, Bandwidth(B) is
committed to the different sources.

Guard band
A guardband is a narrow frequency band between adjacent frequency channels. Guardbands are

usually employed in FDMA (Frequency Division Multiple Access) systems to avoid interference from

the adjacent channels. A guard band may also be necessary between different systems, such

as GSMand DECT, to avoid interference from one system into the other system.
