Project 3. 9th. 2024.

The document outlines an interdisciplinary project for 9th-grade students focused on understanding renewable and non-renewable energy sources. Students are tasked with creating an educational album to raise awareness about energy use, covering topics such as solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal, biomass, coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear energy. The project aims to promote sustainable energy practices through research and creative expression.

Renewable vs. Non-Renewable Energy Sources

Where does the electricity come from to make
the lights work? And where does the energy
come from that makes cars go?

The electricity has to be generated somehow

and gas has to be available. We can choose
the way we generate the electricity required by
using energy sources that are
either Renewable or Non-Renewable.

Renewable Energy Sources

What do you think a Renewable Energy Source means? A renewable energy
source is an energy source that will always be available, and will never run
out. We call these clean sources of energy because we don’t have to burn
anything to produce heat.

Solar panels capture the energy from the sun’s heat and turn
it into electricity for people to use. The sun’s heat will always
be available to us (except at night of course!), therefore it is
considered a renewable energy source

They get their energy from the power of the wind. Why is that
renewable? Because we will always have wind! We can even
use wind turbines out in the open water where there is lots of
wind!

Another renewable energy source is called hydropower. This

harnesses the power of moving water to generate electricity
Geothermal energy is thermal energy extracted from the
Earth's crust. It combines energy from the formation of the planet
and from radioactive decay. Geothermal energy has been
exploited as a source of heat and/or electric power for millennia.

Biomass is biodegradable organic matter of biological, plant, or animal

origin that can be converted into green fuel or biogas. It can also consist of
biodegradable waste material from municipal waste as well as sewage and
sludge from water treatment plants.

Non-Renewable Energy Sources

It means this type of energy source will run out and can not be easily
replaced. Some examples of non-renewable energy sources include coal, oil, and
gas.

Coal comes from the remains of plants that died hundreds of millions of
years ago. It has the highest level of carbon of all fossil fuels.

Oil – also known as petroleum – can be extracted and refined in

order to make products such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.

Natural gas was formed from the remains of tiny sea plants and animals that
died millions of years ago. It is mainly composed of methane .

Nuclear energy is released when atoms' nuclei are fused together

(fusion) or split apart (fission). Nuclear power plants produce electricity
through nuclear fission.
