Aim of the Course


The primary aim of the course is to introduce the students with the principles of management. The
course will start by explaining the process of management as well as the changing views of
management over time. We will then focus on the four functions of management, namely planning,
controlling, organizing, and leading.
As you will be members of organizations, these conceptual tools will first make you aware of
your role in your work settings, and will make you better equipped to make significant
contribution to your organization!

Course Format Lectures will be kept at minimum. You are responsible for the reading the
assigned chapters before the class. The classes will begin by short lectures to facilitate your
understanding of the concepts and theories. Lectures will be followed by in-class assignments,
mostly on cases in the textbook or other outside material. These assignments will be uploaded to
NİNOVA at the end of each class.

Course Textbook
We will be using Robbins S.P., & Coulter, M. 2021. Management (15th edition), Pearson.

Course Requirements:

A. Class assignments & participation (30%)

There will be weekly assignments. Assignments will be teamwork (groups of five). In case of a
member not contributing, you have the right to exclude his/her name from the final
submission!

Weekly Group Assignments


• Every group completes the in-class assignment weekly.
• Assignments are submitted via NİNOVA at the end of class.
Random Selection of 3 Groups per Week
• Each week, 3 out of the 14 groups are selected randomly for grading.

Graded Assignments 24% (Quality-based grades)


Completion
Assignments 6% (Effort-based credit)
Total 30% of final grade
B. Mid Term (30%):

There will be one mid-term exam. The format of the exam questions will be a mixture of
multiple-choice, true-false questions. The exam will be closed-book, no notes, completed in
class during the class period. You will be responsible from all the readings and the lectures.

C. Final Term Project (Report 30%& Presentation 10%)

Groups of 5 will be formed. Groups will identify an engineering SME.:


The term project will be writing a growth consultancy report on a SME. The course is built around
general management concepts that usually apply to large organizations.
However, Turkish business context is dominated by small to medium sized companies. The term
project aims to have students work on engineering SMEs and understand their problems and
ideate on possible solutions, offering their designated SME a roadmap for sustainable growth.
The report will have 4 sections. Each section has a separate due date.
1.1 Literature review: This will be a five page (double space, 12pt) academic literature on
Turkish engineering SME sector with a focus on problems SMEs are facing in relation with
growth (at least 10 sources).
1.2.Industry analysis:
Introduction of the Company
Brief Description and General Structure of the Industry
Present Competitive Situation (Market size growth rate, Market share
distributions, Major competitors, etc. in the national and global markets)
Pest Analysis of the Industry:
o Recent Political and regulatory developments
o Recent Economic developments
o Recent Social and demographic developments
o Recent Technological development and Innovations

1.3.Interview: The team will conduct an interview with the owner/manager of the SME to
understand the SME and the challenges they have with regards to growth.
Job description of the interviewee
Problems the interviewee is facing with regards to sustainable growth
Swot Analysis of the SME, with regards to growth

1.3.4. External Threats

1.4.Synthesis Report: The aim of the project is to understand SMEs, and offer them
suggestions for sustainable growth.

Due Date: The final paper is due Week 14.

Teams have the option of firing members whose performances are abysmal. A team
member can only be fired by the consensus vote of all other team members.
