Difference between Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering

Both Naval Architects, as well as Marine Engineers, work with the ships and allied structures. But
they have different roles. While the Naval Architects design the vessel, Marine Engineers are tasked
to ensure that the ship systems function as per the design.

But what exactly is the difference between Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering

The role of a naval engineer begins when the shipbuilding company receives an order to deliver a
ship or a boat. The naval engineer has to have meetings with the client to understand the need
altogether. Once that is done, the naval engineer will start working on the designing part from
scratch. He may consult the marine engineer to be sure that the design he envisages is suitable for
the vessel in terms of safety and maintenance.

This essentially means that naval architects would work on the ships during the design and initial
construction phase; they would assess the prototypes that are built and modify their plans if
necessary, to ensure that the vessel meets all the statutory compliances in terms of design and
operates safely once it is seaborne.

Marine engineers focus on the mechanical systems that are used on a ship. Their job is to keep ships
running smoothly, which means that they may supervise the maintenance and repairs on a ship’s
engines, navigation equipment, air conditioning, and other mechanical systems.

Job Profile of a Naval Architect:

Naval architects usually work in regular offices at regular work hours. As enumerated above, they
are into developing design plans for ships. It is always handy to have artistic skills as their work
involves drafting designs; they should be proficient in CAD software as well. While designing, they
need to be aware of the regulations, should be adaptive to the inputs of marine engineers and other
stakeholders to ensure delivery of a faultless ship.

Here is the summary of the job responsibilities of a naval architect:

 Meet with clients to discuss the requirements.

 Design and develop the external appearance of a vessel.

 Work on the interior layout of vessels.

 Team up with marine engineers for mechanical equipment placement for the safety and
stability of the vessel.

 Have a prototype constructed through vendors.

 Alter design plans based on the prototype’s performance.

Job Profile of a Marine Engineer:

Shipping companies typically employ marine engineers for onshore as well as offshore duties. The
specific hours they work can vary depending on their work location. As discussed above, Marine
Engineers are tasked to ensure that the vessels ply safely. They need to carry on precautionary
maintenance, regular maintenance, repairs – this includes engine, refrigeration/air-conditioning, and
other mechanical parts.

Here is the summary of the job responsibilities of a marine engineer:

 Perform checks on equipment and keep the necessary log books updated.

 Determine if repairs or maintenance are needed.

 Change/install equipment(s) onboard.

 Supervise/conduct necessary repairs.

 Set work schedules and deadlines for construction, installation, or repairs.

As you can make out from the above, naval architects are into the designing of vessels whereas;
marine engineers are into the maintenance of the ships.
