● A report is a factual description
What is a report?
of an event, incident or issue.
● It is written in accurate
language and well structured
sentences.
● It includes the record of a
sequence of events,
interpretation of their
significance, evaluation of the
facts and conclusion.
Types of reports ● A newspaper report about an
accident/incident or a survey.
● A report for a school
magazine about an event or
function.
Points to remember ● Give a catchy headline in phrasal
form.
● Be factual and do not add any
information on your own that
may seem fictitious.
● Write in indirect speech and
preferably in passive voice.
● Write in third person form and
avoid using personal pronouns.
● Write in uniform tense
(preferably past tense).
Contd. ● Give statistics to make your report
sound authentic.
● The entire report is broken down
into three paragraphs. In the first
paragraph, the entire incident is
reported in a gist form. The next
paragraph contains the other
details related to the incident. The
final paragraph contains the
inconsequential details.
● Avoid imposing your personal
opinions and do not make any
conclusions.
Contd. ● Answer the questions to ‘when’,
‘where’, ‘why’, ‘what’, ‘who’ and
‘how’.
● Develop ideas (causes, reasons,
consequences, opinions)
logically.
● Include information collected
from the people around or
affected by the event.
● Write in a less formal and more
descriptive manner, while writing
a report for a school magazine.
● Word limit is 150-200 words.

● Headline- Catchy and expressive.
● By line- Name of the person writing the report along with his
designation.
● Opening paragraph – It includes the '5 Ws' namely, WHAT, WHY,
WHEN, and WHERE along with WHO was invited as the chief guest.
● Second paragraph- It contains the proper sequence of events that
occurred along with their description - objectives and main highlights
of the programme.
● Concluding paragraph- This includes excerpts from the Chief Guest's
speech, how did the event wind up (prize distribution/annual
report/vote of thanks) and overall response, etc.
