1 A 220 V, 960 rpm, 12.8 A separately excited dc [10] 3
motor has armature circuit resistance and
inductance of 2 ohm and 150 mH, respectively. It
is fed from a single-phase half controlled rectifier
with an ac source voltage of 230 V, 50 Hz.
Calculate:-
(i) Motor torque for α=600 and speed=600 rpm.
(ii) Motor torque for α=600 and T=20 N-m.
2 What are the different components of load [10] 2
torque? Draw the torque speed curves for
different types of loads.
3 A 3-phase, 100 kW, 6 pole, 960 rpm wound rotor
induction machine drives a load whose torque
varies such that a torque of 3000 N-m of 10 sec
duration is followed by a torque of 500 N-m of [10] 2
duration long enough for the motor to attain
steady-state speed. Calculate moment of inertia of
the flywheel, if motor torque should not exceed

twice the rated value. Moment of inertia of the

motor is 10 kg-m2. Motor has a linear speed-
torque curve in the region of interest.
4 Discuss the principle of load equalization. Derive [10] 3
the expression of the moment of inertia of the
flywheel in order to establish load equalization.
5 (a) Explain the working principle of Current 3
Hysteresis Controlled PWM with necessary
diagram, waveforms and equation.
(b) Derive the equation of current ripple in CHC [4+3+3=10]
PWM.
(c) Justify mathematically why CHC PWM
outperforms other PWM techniques in higher
switching frequency application.
6 A 2200V, 50 Hz, 3-phase, 6 Pole, Y- Connected,
squirrel cage induction motor has following
parameters:-
Rs=0.075 Ohm, Rr’= 0.12 Ohm, Xs=Xr’= 0.5
Ohm. [10] 3
The combined inertia of motor and load is 100
kg-m2.
(i) Calculate time taken and energy dissipated in
the motor during starting.
(ii) Calculate time taken and energy dissipated in
the motor when it is started by plugging.
7 Derive the generalized state equation of machine
using Kron’s primitive machine model. Also [10] 4
derive the equation of electromagnetic torque
from the same machine model.
8 Explain how we can control the speed of a three
phase symmetrical squirrel cage induction [10] 4
machine using vector control/ Field Oriented
control technique with necessary equations, block
diagram and waveforms.
9 Explain the operating principle of Space Vector
PWM. Also explain on what points SVPWM [10] 4
outperforms Sine PWM.
