The Relationship Between Social Media Usage and

Interpersonal Communication Skills Among Grade 12 Open

High School Learners

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between social media usage and
interpersonal communication skills among Grade 12 Open High School
learners. Using Pearson correlation analysis, a moderate positive correlation
(0.45386) was found between these two variables. The findings suggest that
while social media can enhance communication skills, excessive reliance on
digital platforms may negatively impact face-to-face interactions. The study
highlights the importance of balancing online and offline communication to
develop strong interpersonal skills.

Introduction

Background of the Study

In today's digital age, social media plays a significant role in shaping

communication patterns among students. While it provides a platform for
interaction and self-expression, concerns have been raised about its impact
on face-to-face communication skills. This study seeks to determine how
social media usage influences interpersonal communication skills among
Grade 12 Open High School learners.

Statement of the Problem

This research aims to answer the following questions:

1.What is the level of interpersonal communication skills among Grade

12 Open High School learners?
2.How frequently do students use social media for communication
purposes?

3.Is there a significant relationship between social media usage and

interpersonal communication skills?

Significance of the Study

This study is important for educators, students, and parents to understand

how digital interactions influence communication skills. The results may help
in developing strategies to promote balanced social media use while
strengthening interpersonal skills in academic and personal settings.

Methodology

Research Design

This study employs a correlational research design to determine the

relationship between social media usage and interpersonal communication
skills.

Respondents

The study was conducted among Grade 12 Open High School learners. A
total of [Insert Number] respondents participated in the survey.

Data Collection

A structured questionnaire was used to assess students’ social media usage

and interpersonal communication skills. The responses were measured using
a Likert scale.

Data Analysis

The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to analyze the relationship

between social media usage and interpersonal communication skills.
Results and Discussion

Findings

1.The overall interpersonal communication skills score was 3.36,

indicating that students moderately agree with their ability to manage
emotions, build relationships, and communicate effectively.

2.The statement "Seizes upon chances to improve the department’s

prospects" received a mean score of 3.31 (Disagree), suggesting a
lack of initiative in improving communication and leadership skills.

3.The statement "Reviews performance to determine areas for

improvement" had a mean score of 3.38 (Agree), showing a recognition
of self-improvement.

4.Protects the integrity and confidentiality of information" scored 3.31

(Strongly Disagree), raising concerns about privacy and ethical
considerations in communication.

5.A Pearson correlation value of 0.45386 indicates a moderate positive

correlation between social media usage and interpersonal
communication skills.

Discussion

The findings indicate that moderate social media use can contribute to
improved communication skills. However, excessive use may limit face-to-
face interactions, leading to difficulties in understanding non-verbal cues such
as facial expressions and body language. These results align with previous
studies by Keles, McCrae, and Grealish (2020) and Kushin and Yamamoto
(2019), which highlight the dual effects of social media on communication
skills.

Conclusion and Recommendations

Conclusion

The study concludes that social media usage has a moderate impact on
interpersonal communication skills. While it facilitates interaction and self-
expression, excessive reliance on digital platforms may hinder the
development of deep, meaningful face-to-face conversations.

Recommendations

Promote Balanced Social Media Use – Schools should integrate digital

literacy programs to educate students on responsible social media use.

Enhance Face-to-Face Communication Activities – Educators should

encourage group discussions, debates, and extracurricular activities to
strengthen interpersonal skills.

Develop Training Programs – Workshops on effective communication

should be provided to help students improve their verbal and non-verbal
communication skills.

Further Research – Future studies should explore other factors influencing

interpersonal communication skills, such as family background, personality
traits, and academic performance.
