HYDROLOGY & WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING TUTORIAL WORKBOOK
PREFACE
Hydrology & Water Resources Engineering is one of common course in the third year
curriculum of Civil Engineering. This is the first edition of Hydrology & Water Resources
Engineering Tutorial Workbook for B.E. 3rd year students of SILVER OAK UNIVERSITY,
AHMEDABAD.
Hydrology & Water Resources Engineering tutorial workbook is intended to serve as booklet
which consists of series of important questions for the course in machine. It covers the questions
related to syllabus of Gujarat Technological University. These tutorials are designed in such a
way that when students will start solving the problems they will not only prepare themselves for
final exams to be held by Gujarat Technological University but will also get a glimpse of
application of Water Resources Management.
The main feature of this book are:
i) To develop basic understanding about precipitation, infiltration,
evapotranspiration, hydrograph, capacity of reservoir
ii) To enable the students for estimation of runoff, infiltration, evaporation, floods
and reservoir capacity
iii) To create understanding about features of various types of dam
Each Tutorial is carefully designed according to the SOU syllabus and main focus is on theory
questions and analytical problems which are important aid while preparing for examinations.

13. A rain gauge ‘A’ was inoperative during a specific storm. The rainfall recorded at three
surrounding stations B, C and D during that storm were 107, 89 and 122 mm respectively.
If the average annual rainfall of stations A, B, C and D are 978, 1120, 935 and 1200 mm
respectively, estimate the storm precipitation of station A.

Thiessen weights of 0.10, 0.16, 0.12, 0.11, 0.09, 0.08, 0.07, 0.11, 0.06 and 0.10. If the
rainfalls recorded at these gauges during a cyclonic storm are 132, 114, 162, 138, 207,
156, 135, 158, 168 and 150 mm respectively determine the average depth of rainfall by
Thiessen mean and arithmetic mean methods. Also determine the volume of surface
runoff at the basin outlet if 35% of the rainfall is lost as infiltration. Take the area of the
basin as 5800 km2 and express your answer in million cubic meters.
15. The rainfall values at gauging stations and corresponding areas of Thiessen’s polygons for
a drainage basin are as follows:
Station A B C D E F G
Area of Thiessen’s Polygon (km2) 160 135 92 110 68 70 35
Rainfall (cm) 10.0 13.5 9.1 12.6 11.2 14.0 10.8
Compute the average rainfall over the basin.
16. The rates of rainfall for successive 30 minute period of a 3-hour storm are 1.5, 3.2, 4.3,
2.7, 2.1 and 1.2 cm/hr. The surface runoff in response to the storm is estimated to be 3.0
cm. Determine ɸ-index and w-index. Consider a total of depression and interception
losses of 1.0 cm.
