ACTIVITY SHEET
Name: ______________________________________________________________ Score: ____________________
Grade/Section: Date: _____________________
Subject: General Mathematics
Activity Type: Control No. _____2 ______
Activity Title: Operation on Function
Learning Competency: performs addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
Learning Target/s: 1. Define function
2. Performs addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
Reference/s: General Mathematics for Senior High School
Author:Dante S. Salazar & Orlando A. Orance

Concept Notes
To be able to perform different operations on function, you need also to be familiar with the following
rules and concepts.

Operation Model Descriptions

Sum (f+g)(x) = f(x)+g(x) to get the sum of two functions, just add the terms
of f(x) and g(x)
Example:
f(x) = 3x+2
g(x) = 2x+5

(f+g)(x) = (3x+2)+(2x+5)
(f+g)(x) = 5x+7 Combine like terms
Difference (f-g)(x) = f(x)-g(x) to get the difference of two functions, just subtract
the terms of f(x) and g(x)
Example:
f(x) = 3x+2
g(x) = 2x+5

(f-g)(x) = (3x+2)-(2x+5)
(f-g)(x) = x-3 Combine like terms
Product (f-g)(x) = f(x)*g(x) to get the product of two functions, just multiply
the terms of f(x) and g(x)
Example:
f(x) = 3x+2
g(x) = 2x+5

(f*g)(x) = (3x+2)(2x+5) FOIL Method

(f*g)(x) = 6x2 + 19x + 10 Combine like terms
FOIL Method (w + x)(y + z) F- multiply the First terms = wy
O – multiply the Outside terms = wz
wy + wz + xy + xz I – multiply the Inside terms = xy
L – multiply the Last terms = xz
Quotient f f (x ) to get the quotient of two functions, just divide the
( )(x) = terms of f(x) and g(x)
g g (x)

Example:
f(x) = 3x+2
g(x) = 2x+5
simplify if possible
f 3 x +2
( )(x) =
g g ( x ) 2 x +5

Activity: perform the indicated operations. Use the following functions below.
f(x) = 5x – 4 g(x) = x + 3 h(x) = x2 + 5x + 6
1. f(x) + g(x)
2. f(x) - g(x)
3. f(x) * g(x)
h(x )
4.
g (x)
5. f(x) + g(x) + h(x)
