Concept Notes

Composition of Functions (f o g)(x) = f(g(x)) Here, the domain of g is x and the domain
of f is g(x).
Example:
f(x) = 3x +2
g(x) = 2x + 5

Find (f o g)(x) Here, the function of g(x) serves as the

Write f(x) = 3x + 2 domain of f(x) to determine (f o g)(x).
Replace x by g(x)
(f o g)(x) = 3(2x +5) + 2
(f o g)(x) = 6x + 15 + 2
(f o g)(x) = 6x + 17

Find (f o g)(2) Here, the domain 2 is substituted to g(x)

Write g(x) = 2x + 5 and then, the result is substituted to f(x) and
Replace x by 2 determine (f o g)(2).
g(2) = 2(2) + 5
g(2) = 4 + 5
g(2) = 9

Write f(x) = 3x + 2
Replace x by 9
(f o g)(2) = 3(9) + 2
(f o g)(2) = 27+ 2
(f o g)(2) = 29

Activity: Evaluate each of the following composition of functions. Use the following functions below.

f(x) = 2x – 4 g(x) = 4x + 3 h(x) = x2 – 6

1. (f o g)(x)
2. (g o f)(x)
3. (f o h)(x)
4. (h o f)(x)
5. f(f(g(x)))
