WATER DEMAND

TOTAL AVERAGE WATER DEMAND

The average water demand for the proposed office block is tabulated as below

Water Demand
Item Description Unit
( gallon/day )

1 Office 1 6,159

(See Appendix for details)

SUCTION WATER TANK

Suction water tank capacity : 1/3 x Water Demand

= 1/3 x 6,159 gallon
= 2053 gallon
= 9.33m³

For easy calculation, the suction is proposed to be 2,369 gallons (12 m3)

Provide size : Length 2m x Width 3m x Height 2m.

Effective capacity : 12m³ = 12 x 220 = 2,369 gallon
TWL : 2.6 m ODL
BWL : 0.8 m ODL

ELEVATED WATER TANK

Elevated water tank capacity for 1 days storage : 6,159 gallon

Provide size : Length 7m x Width 4m x Height 1m.
For operational pumping daily : 6,159 gallons /day
= 6,159 x 0.00454
= 28.0 m3
TWL : 11.6 m
BWL : 10.8 m
PUMP DESIGN CALCULATION

PUMPING FLOW RATE

Adopt 6 hours pumping daily (for office it is required to be less than 8 hours
pumping)

Average pumping rate, Q = Water Demand / 6 hours

= 6159 gallon / 6 hours

= 1026.5 gallon/hr

= 1026.5/220

= 4.6660 m³/hr

= 0.0778m³/min

= 1.2961 x 10-3m³/sec

FRICTION HEAD LOSSES

For the calculation of the frictional losses, use the Hazen - Williams Formula as
follows:

I = 10.666Q1.85
C1.85 x D4.87

Hf = I x L
Where : I = Hydraulic gradient
Q = Quantity of flow (m3/s) = 4.6660 m3/hr
= 1.2961 x 10-3m³/sec
C = Flow velocity coefficient
Stainless steel pipes : 110
D = Pipe diameter (m), 0.05 m (50 mm)
L = Total length of pipe line (m)

I = 10.666Q1.85
C1.85 x D4.87
= 10.666(1.2961 x 10-3)1.85
1101.85 x 0.054.87
= 10.666(4.5538 x 10-6)
5978.283 x 4.613 x 10-7
= 4.8572 x 10-5
2.7578 x 10-3
= 1.7612 x 10-2

Hf = I x L L = Elevated Water Tank TWL +

= 1.7612x 10-2 x 79.075 estimated horizontal delivery
= 1.3927 m pipe distance
= 79.075m

Pump Selection & Design

Summary of performance

Design pumping rate = 4.660 m3/hr (daily water demand)

Design total head = 14.1318 x 20% (safety factor recommended

by Water Authority)
= 14.1318 x 1.2
= 16.9582 m
= 17 m

Minimum total head = 10.63 m

Calculation For Power

wkW = g x H x Q x specific density (sd)

where wkW= water power in kilowatts

g = acceleration due to gravity (9.81 m/s2)

H = total dynamic head in meters
Q = flowrate in m3/s
sd = 1.0 kg/m3 for fresh water

1. Power at Maximum Total Head (Duty Point)

Using the data given above, wkW = 9.81 x 17 x 1.2961 x 10-3 x 1.0
= 0.2 kW

At the operating point, with H = 17 m

Q = 4.6660 m3/hr = 1.2961 x 10-3 m3/s

Efficiency of pump,η > 75% (required by Water Authority)

1.1Thus Duty Brake Water Power, bkW = wkW / η

= 0.6/0.75
= 0.2883 kW

1.2 Brake Kilowatt = Total Head (m) x Q(m3/hr) x Specific Gravity

Pump Efficiency % x 367
= 17 x 4.666 x1
75% x 367
= 79.322
275.25
= 0.2882 kW

2. Power at Minimum Total Head

Using the data given above, wkW = 9.81 x 10.63 x 1.2961 x 10-3 x 1.0
= 0.135 kW

H = 10.63 m
Q = 4.6660 m3/hr = 1.2961 x 10-3 m3/s

Efficiency of pump, η > 75 % (required by Water Authority)

2.1 Thus Duty Brake Water Power, bkW = wkW/ η

= 0.135/0.75
= 0.1802 kW

2.2 Brake Kilowatt = Total Head (m) x Q(m3/hr) x Specific Gravity

Pump Efficiency % x 367
= 10.63 x 4.6660 x 1
75% x 367
= 49.5995
275.25
= 0.1802kW

Take final Motor Power = 0.5 kW
