Course Outline
ICT222: Digital Computer Design

The objectives of this course:


 To acquaint students with the fundamentals of digital design,
 Students should be familiar with the methodologies, and techniques for the
structured design of digital systems.
 Students should know how to use K- maps to minimize circuit design
 Students should be able to design circuits using VHDL

Learning Outcomes:
After successful completion of this course;
 Students should be familiar with working principle of sequential and
combinational circuits
 Students should know how to use K-map to minimize circuits using POS or
SOP
 Students should be able to design simple workable circuits.
 Students should be able to use VHDL to design circuits
 Students would appreciate how computer systems are designed and
manufactured in the industrial environments

The course Outline:


 Review of :
o Number bases and their arithmetic’s,
o Boolean functions
o Logic Gate,
o Truth Table,
o POS, SOP,
o K-map
o combinational circuit,

 Digital design technologies (commonly-used digital components):


 Combinational Circuits
o Multiplexers, demultiplexers,
o decoders,
o encoders,
o Adders(half, full),
o Majority function,
o Comparator (1bit, 4bit, 8bit, serial)
o ALU-Arithmetic logic Unit (1 bit and 16 bit)

 Sequential Circuits
o flip-flops,
o counters,
o Frequency dividers
o timers
o Registers, etc.
o Carry-look-ahead adders, ALUs.

 *Digital design methodology and techniques for finite state machines


o Top-down,
o Bottom up,
o Mixed,
o modular design,
o Controller/controlled-component architecture ,
 *Design environments and tools
o (Design life cycle using model digital development environments,
o Design specification:
 graphical,
 Logic synthesis,
 Simulation: functional and timing

 Introduction to Microcontrollers and Microprocessors
