Problem based learning (PBL) is an instructional method where problems form the starting point for the learning process. The key characteristics of PBL include: 1) Problems come first - learning begins with a problem scenario rather than presentation of facts. 2) Integration of learning - PBL aims to develop students' knowledge and skills through integration of different disciplines to solve real-world problems. 3) Small group sessions - students work in small collaborative groups to identify learning needs, conduct self-directed learning, and apply their new knowledge to understand and solve the problem.
