Reading Techniques
UNIT I:
Session No. 1
Objectives:
❖ To develop the reading techniques that make easier the understanding of texts related to their
major.
❖ To apply the reading techniques acquired to analyze written information regarding their degree
course.
❖ To share the general knowledge acquired with their classmates by applying different types of
reading techniques, inside and outside the classroom, reinforcing social values.
Unit I: Technical Reading
CONTENTS OF UNIT I:
"Reading" is the process of looking at a series of written symbols and getting meaning from them.
When we read, we use our eyes to receive written symbols (letters, punctuation marks and spaces)
and we use our brain to convert them into words, sentences and paragraphs that communicate
something to us.
But why is reading so important not only for college students but also for all people? Reading not
only makes you grow academically but also it increases your mental health. It makes your brain
more efficient creating new connections with new things you learn. Indeed, being a regular reader
will give you:
● better attainment to writing ability,
● better comprehension skills and understanding of grammar,
● a wider vocabulary,
● superior general knowledge,
● and a great confidence to understand different matters.
Stages of Reading
Unit I: Technical Reading
To read correctly, you have to divide the process into three stages, pre-reading, through reading
and post-reading. Of course, most people already do this unconsciously, so here you just will be
given a short explanation of what you need to do in every stage.
PRE-READING
In the pre-reading stage, a person prepares herself or himself
for the things that they are going to read. In addition,
according to research previewing the text can increase the
reader’s understanding and involvement with the text. A
preview of the text can be given with the title of the text, a
picture or any other hint that makes the readers know what
the text is about.
THROUGH READING
During this stage, you have to focus on getting important
details from the text to understand clearly the purpose and
meaning of the information given. It helps you to get the
universal meaning of the whole text.
POST READING
In this simply go to the pre-reading stages and try to fill the
gaps that you make according to your assumption. In addition,
prepare a detailed sketch of what you have learned and
compare it with prediction. In this stage you can consolidate
what you read making evaluation of the text, discussing the
content with other readers, or teaching other the new
knowledge you gained.
Types of reading
Another important aspect to point out is the distinction of the readings according on the purpose
the reader is engaged with a text.
Extensive reading involves understanding large quantities of material, directly and fluently. It may
include read simple for pleasure without guidance and at your own level-pace. It is when you read
a novel or a book as a pastime.
Intensive reading: is used to practice specific strategies or skills such as:
● Predict determine what you thing will happen in the text. Use the title, text and illustration to
help you.
● Visualize Create mental images of the characters sitting and events in the text.
● Questions Stop and ask yourself questions to see if the text make sense. Reread the text if you
need more information.
● Connect think about what you already know about the text. Find ways to relate the text to
yourself, other text and the world around you.
● Identify determine the author ‘s purpose. Find the important details, main idea, and the
themes of the text.
● Infer use clues in the text and your own knowledge to fill in the gaps and draw conclusions.
● Evaluate think about the text as a whole and form opinions about what you read
Why do we Read?
You probably know that even in your own language reading is regarded as important because it can
be entertaining and educational, can open up new worlds and enrich your life, and can improve
hand-eye co-ordination and enhance social skills.
Reading is an essential skill for language learners. When your reading skills
improve, your listening, speaking and writing skills improve too. Here are
some of the specific reasons why English learners are encouraged to read in
English: The constant repetition of words and patterns in reading helps you
learn and remember vocabulary and grammar structures.
✔Reading helps you become familiar with the rhythm of English. Over time,
it will start to feel natural and you will notice when a sentence or phrase
doesn't seem right.
✔Unlike conversation, reading is something you can do on your own.
✔Listening as you read aloud can help you improve your pronunciation skills.
