PROBLEM DEFINITION
• Size a suction line of a centrifugal pump. Upstream conditions are:
Temperature = 20 oC
Pressure = 1.0 Barg
Flowrate = 20.0 m3/hr
Composition = Water = 100%

SIMULATION SETUP
• Define the inlet stream conditions and composition.
WWW.OMESOLGLOBAL.COM [email protected]
SIMULATION SETUP
• Define the pipe segment.
• We assume that there is no heat loss or gain. Double click the pipe segment
then go to Rating Option Select Heat Transfer Option Heat Loss and put
the value 0.
• Go to Rating Option Sizing Option Click on Append Segment Button to
add the segments and fittings.
Input the pipe length and elevation detail. Double click the Outer Diameter
field to select schedule, Nominal diameter and pipe MOC.

Line Sizing Criteria Overview
Line sizing is crucial for achieving an optimal balance between efficiency,
cost, and operational safety. The criteria primarily hinge on two key
parameters:
Maximum Allowable Pressure Drop:
• Pressure drop must remain within acceptable limits to ensure efficient flow and
maintain sufficient pressure at downstream points.
• Excessive pressure drop can lead to increased energy costs (e.g., higher
pumping or compression requirements) and reduced system performance.
Flow Velocity:
• Velocity should be optimized to avoid issues like erosion, noise, or vibration at
high speeds, and phase separation or sedimentation at low speeds.
• Recommended velocity ranges vary based on the type of fluid (gas, liquid, or
two-phase) and application.

DESIGN COMPLIANCE API 14E STANDARD
By optimizing pipe size to maintain an appropriate balance between velocity
and pressure drop, an economically viable and technically sound design can
be achieved.

Velocity Criteria As Per API RP 14E
Final Recommendation
Scenario 3 with a 4.5-inch outer diameter (Schedule 40) pipe is the best choice.
Reasoning: The velocity of 2.219 ft/s falls within the recommended range, and the
pressure drop of 0.0344 psi is well within the allowable limit.
Compliance: This selection meets both the pressure drop and velocity criteria for
centrifugal pump suction lines, ensuring safe and efficient operation.
