Expt.- 9: SMT Assembly and Manufacturing of LED Lighting

AIM:
To assemble LED Lighting PCB Board using SMT (Surface Mount Technology) Process.

Components Required:

S. No Components Required Values quantity

1. LED Lighting PCB Board - 1
2. SMTMATE 660 Machine - 1
3. Resisters SMD 1K 5
4. LED SMD 1206 5
5. Reflow Oven - 1

Theory:
SMT(Surface-mount technology), originally called planar mounting, is a method in which
the electrical components are mounted directly onto the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB). An
electrical component mounted in this manner is referred to as a surface-mount device (SMD). In
industry, this approach has largely replaced the through-hole technology construction method of
fitting components, in large part because SMT allows for increased manufacturing automation which
reduces cost and improves quality. It also allows for more components to fit on a given area of
substrate. Both technologies can be used on the same board, with the through-hole technology often
used for components not suitable for surface mounting such as large transformers and heat-sinked
power semiconductors.
An SMT component is usually smaller than its through-hole counterpart because it has either smaller
leads or no leads at all. It may have short pins or leads of various styles, flat contacts, a matrix of sol-
der balls (BGAs), or terminations on the body of the component.

SMTMATE 660:

The SMTMATE 660 is an inline machine. It has six nozzles with conveyors. This
machine is suitable to make the SMT line. The compressor has to connect within the external. It has
a widely adjustable conveyor for a place of various sizes of the board. We have to attach 64 no of
feeders in this machine. It has support 8mm,12mm,16mm,24mm feeders, vibrator feeder & IC tray.
It support.csv / .txt format file for make a program. it has easy access to GUI software. It has eight
cameras. One is the mark camera; it is used to find the component place on the PCB board. Another
one is an HD camera to adjust the component angle. Then it has six HSPD cameras to identify the
RLC components.

Pre-lab Questions:

1. What is Surface Mount Technology (SMT)?

2. What are the key advantages of using SMT for assembling PCBs compared to traditional
soldering methods?
3. What safety precautions should be taken when working with the soldering materials and
equipment during the SMT process?
Lab Procedure:

1.Create LED Lighting Design / Circuit in EasyEDA tool using SMD components.
2.The Schematic should be like the following figure.

3.Then convert the Schematic to PCB under the Design menu in the EasyEDA tool.
4.Then arrange the components and connect the components using tracks properly.
5.In SMT based designing of circuit the tracks and components should be in TopLayer.
6.The PCB Design should be like the following figure.

7.Go to File and select Generate PCB Fabrication File for the Generation of Gerber file.
8.By using the Gerber file create a PCB Board.
9.The PCB Board will be like the following figure.
10.Using the PCB Board SMT Manufacturing process can be made.
11.Switch on the PCBMATE Machine.
12.Load the LED Lighting PCB Board to the PCBMATE Machine.
13.Double Click SMTMATE 44F shortcut icon in the Desktop screen to open the Software.

14.Click Connect Button in the following window.

15.To Create Project Click Project Button in the above window.

16.A small popup window appears with two options Create Project and Open Project.

17.Select Create Project option in the Window.

18. A small popup window appears with two options Manual Edit and Import PCB File.
19.Click Manual Edit Button in the small popup window.

20.The Following PCB Edit window will appear.

21.Select Mark Setting Option in the PCB Edit window.

22.The Above window will be opened.
23.save Mark1 coordinates and Mark2 Coordinates in the Mark setting.
24.Click Test Button to check the Mark1 coordinates and Mark2 Coordinates are correct.
25.Move mark camera center to one component and click NEW button in the PCB Edit window

26.Double click the line to Complete the Informations (i.e) Label, Value, Footprint etc.
27.Similarly Repeat the Step for all the Components Present in the PCB.
28.Select or Click Optimize tab in the PCB Edit window,
29. The Following Optimization window will be opened.

30. Optimization window shows the Feeder nos where the Feeders to be placed.
31. Click Optimization Button to save the Program.
32. Click FeederPara tab in the PCB Edit window.
33. The Below window will be opened.
34. Choose the Particular Feeder nos need for the PCB and save the Pick coordinates.

35.Close the FeederPara tab and open SMT Run .

36.In SMT Run tab select Run to start placing the components in the PCB.
37.After placing the components final output of the SMTMate machine will be like the following.
Post Lab Questions:

1. What challenges did you encounter during the SMT assembly process, and how did you
resolve them?
2. After completing the SMT assembly of the LED lighting PCB, how did you verify the
functionality of the components on the board?
3. How does the use of automated pick-and-place machines influence the speed and accuracy
of the SMT assembly process for LED lighting PCBs?

Result:
Thus the LED Lighting PCB Board is successfully Assembled using SMT Process.
