CPE 111: ASSIGNMENT TWO

Submit on or before 28th January 2025

1. A hollow mild steel tube 6 m long has an external diameter of 150 mm. The bore
diameter is 85 mm throughout the length of the tube. The tube is subjected to an axial
tensile load of 65 tonnes and the extension was measured to be 3 mm. Determine the
value of Youngs modulus for the tube. [3 MARKS]

2. A 25 mm diameter bar is subjected to an axial tensile load of 100 kN. Under the action
of this load, a 200 mm gauge length is found to extend by 0.2 mm. Determine the
modulus of elasticity of the bar material. In order to reduce the weight of the bar while
keeping the external diameter constant, the bar is drilled at the centre to produce a
cylinder of uniform thickness. What is the maximum inside diameter possible given the
allowable stress is 260 MN/m2. The load remains 100 kN. [8 MARKS]

3. A cylindrical specimen made of nickel having an elastic modulus of 207 GPa and an
original diameter of 10.2 mm will experience only elastic deformation when a tensile
load of 8900 N is applied. Compute the maximum length of the specimen before
deformation if the maximum allowable elongation is 0.25 mm. [3 MARKS]

4. When a steel bar of 12 mm x 12 mm cross-section is subjected to a tensile force of 11

kN, the measured elastic extension over a length of 150 mm is 5.5 x 10-2 mm.
Determine:

i. The stress in the bar

ii. The elastic strain developed
iii. The value of Young's modulus for steel [5 MARKS]
5. Find the minimum diameter of a steel wire, which is used to raise a load of 4000 N if
the stress in the wire is not to exceed 95MN/m2 [3 MARKS]

6. An axial pull of 35 kN is acting on a bar consisting of three lengths as shown in figure

below. If the Young's modulus for the material is 2.1 x 105 N/mm2, determine.
i. Stresses in each section
ii. Total extension of the bar

[8 MARKS]
