Gis - Lab 3
Objectives:
1. Geotag trees, roads, buildings, and etc.
2. Create a map layout of geotag features using QGIS.
Methodology:
A. Geotagging
1. Download GPS Essentials.
2. Open the application and allow the access of location.
3. Upon opening, you can see different features the application has.
4. Navigate to satellite. It will show the number of satellites the device is connected.
5. Go to the place where you will pin a location.
6. Navigate to waypoints. Create waypoints by clicking the plus symbol at the lower right of interface. Input a
referred name and description. You may also choose a symbol you want to use for pinning. This will help
you to distinguish points from each other.
7. Geotag trees, roads, building and etc.
8. After geotagging, export the file by clicking the three dots at the upper right side of the application. Then
export to kmz format.
B. Digitizing
1. Open the QGIS.
2. In the menu bar, click the Layer > Add Layer > Add Vector Layer. Data Source Manager |Vector will appear.
3. Under the Source click the three dots to browse the file. Click the kmz file that you exported from the
GPS essential and open. Then click add.
4. Point your mouse to the file you imported in the layer tab then right click > Properties.
5. Click Labels and change No Labels to Single Labels. Labels of points will appear in the interface.
6. To create a layer of vector, in the menu bar, click the Layer > Create Layer > New Shapefile Layer.
7. Click the three dots to browse where you will save the vector file. Enter a file name then save.
8. Select a geometry type (e.g. polygon for buildings).
9. Select the CRS , WGS 84 / UTM zone 51N. Then click Ok.
10. You may add an entity under the new field. Just type the name of the entity you want to add (e.g. name, type
etc.) then click Add to Field List .
11. Click ok when above steps are done.
12. Do the same thing when adding layer for other geometry type (e.g. line for roads, point for trees).
13. To add feature, just click the layer you want to edit. Click toggle editing tool . .
14. Click Add Polygon Feature if polygon geometry, Add Line Feature if line geometry, or Add Point
Feature if point geometry.
15. Then click the point you want to put the said feature.
16. Click right click, once tracing is completed. The feature attribute will appear. Enter the data for that feature.
Then click ok.
17. Click Save Layer Edits once all edit is finished.
18. To categorized object based on entity, right click on the layer of the feature, click Properties > Symbology
then change No Symbols to Categorized.
19. You may also customize the color of the features under Properties > Symbology.
20. Once all changes are finished, click apply then okay.
C. Map Layout
1. In the menu bar, click Project > New Print Layout > Enter a unique print out title.
2. Use the tools in the toolbox to add the
map, legend, scale bar, north arrow, title, and etc.
3. On the right side you may also see the Layout and Item Properties Panel where you can customize each item.
4. Once the layout is finished, click Layout then Export as Image.
