INTRODUCTION

CONSTRUCTIONMATERIALS
AND TESTING
The course deals with the physical
properties of common construction
materials primarily metals, plastics, wood,
concrete, coarse and fine aggregates,
asphalt and synthetic materials;
examination of material properties with
respect to design and use of end product,
design and control of aggregates, concrete
and asphalt mixtures, principle of testing;
characteristics of test; properties of
materials and materials testing equipment.

BROAD
CLASSIFICATION
OF MATERIALS
1) Natural materials - The materials which are obtained from natural sources like
earth, plants, and animals are called natural materials. Eg. Stone, timber, bitumen,
lime, soil etc

5
2) Artificial materials – The materials which are produced in the industries by
chemical or mechanical processes are called artificial materials. Eg. Bricks, tiles,
cement, precast concrete, plywood, glass, plastic etc

6
3) Special materials – The materials which are produced for special purposes like waterproofing,
sound proofing, damp proofing, thermal insulating are called special materials. Eg. Fibers,
ferroconcrete, artificial timber, adhesives, epoxy, geo-synthetic, ceramic materials

7
4) Finishing materials – The materials which are produces for the use of finishing
purposes of building constructions are called finishing materials. Eg. Lime mortar,
cement mortar, special mortar, Plaster Of Paris, paint, distemper, varnishes,
cladding materials, linoleum etc

8
5) Recycled construction materials – The materials which are recycled from the waste
construction or destruction are called recycled materials. Eg. Rich husk, baggage, coir
fiber, straw, coconut tree trunk, plastic waste, polymer waste, rubber waste, coconut
leaves, fly-ash, blast furnace, slag, granite, marbles, polishing wastes

GENERAL
PROPERTIES OF
ENGINEERING
MATERIALS
General Properties of Engineering Materials
 Physical properties. A material undergoes transition under the influence of temperature
and pressure, and these changes are physical in nature, because their molecules remain
intact. [Density, specific gravity, porosity, water absorption, etc…]

 Mechanical properties. It is the property of material which opposes the deformation or

breakdown of material in presence of external forces or load. [tensile strength,
compressive strength, rigidity, hardness, creep, fatigue, etc…]

 Thermal properties. The properties of a material which is related to its conductivity of

heat. These are the properties which are exhibited by a material when heat is passed
through it.

 Chemical properties. A chemical property is any of a material’s properties that becomes

evident during, or after, a chemical reaction; that is, any quality that can be established
only by changing a substance’s chemical identity. Chemical properties cannot be
determined just by viewing or touching the substance; the substance’s internal structure
must be affected greatly for its chemical properties to be investigated. [resistance to
acids, alkaline, brine, and oxidation]

General Properties of Engineering Materials
 ECONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS. COST SAVING
CHARACTERISTICS.

AESTHETIC PROPERTIES. THE QUALITIES THAT MAKE

A PRODUCT ATTRACTIVE TO LOOK AT, OR PLEASING
TO EXPERIENCE. [COLOR, SURFACE SMOOTHNESS, THE
REFLECTION OF LIGHT, ETC…]

PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS ARE DETERMINED BY

LABORATORY TESTING AND FIELD TESTING.
TO AVOID INCONSISTENCIES IN TEST RESULTS,
STANDARDS ARE DEVISED WHICH DESCRIBE THE TEST
APPARATUS AND THE PROCEDURE.

15
General Properties of Engineering Materials
 ITEMS THAT ARE USUALLY STANDARDIZED IN A TEST ARE:
OBTAINING TEST SPECIMENS AND NUMBER OF SPECIMENS
SIZE AND SHAPE OF THE SPECIMEN
PREPARATION OF SPECIMENS FOR TESTING
TEMPERATURE & MOISTURE DURING PREPARATION & TESTING
TYPE OF MACHINERY
RATE OF LOADING
INTERPRETATION OF TEST RESULTS
WRITING A REPORT

STANDARDIZATION INSTITUTES:
TURKEY - TURKISH STANDARDS INSTITUTE ( TSE)
ENGLAND - BRITISH STANDARDS INSTITUTE ( BSI)
GERMANY - DEUTSCHE INSTITUTE NORM (DIN)
U. S. - AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR TESTING AND MATERIALS (ASTM)
EUROPE - EUROPEAN COMMITTEE FOR STANDARDIZATION (CEN)

16
Importance of The Study of
Construction Materials
• KNOW THE SOURCES OF CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS;

IDENTIFY AND KNOW THE PROPERTIES OF VARIOUS CONSTRUCTION

MATERIALS;

KNOW HOW THE MATERIALS ARE TESTED AS PER ASTM STANDARDS;

KNOW HOW TO CHOOSE PROPER MATERIAL FROM THE COMMERCIALLY

AVAILABLE VARIETIES FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE OF CONSTRUCTION;

KNOW COMMON DEFECTS IN THE MATERIALS;

KNOW VARIOUS PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN WHILE CONSTRUCTING FOR

BETTER DURABILITY.
