1 Divide students into pairs (A and B).
2 Ask students to sit at the same table so that they can face you and each other.
3 Give each student a copy of the Unit 7 Speaking task 1 student handout. Give them time to look at the
images. Say: I’d like each of you to talk on your own. I’m going to point to an image and I’d like you to talk
about it.

4 Point to the first image. Say: Student A (replace with student’s name), here is your photo. It shows a house you
could buy. Please tell us what you can see in the photo. What needs doing to the house? What services would
you want to have done?

5 Student A should talk for 1–2 minutes without interruption. Student B should remain silent.
6 Then point to the second image. Say: Student B (replace with student’s name), here is your picture. It shows
a house after a party. Please tell us what you can see in the picture. What needs doing to the house? What
would you do yourself? What would you have done?

7 Student B should talk for 1–2 minutes without interruption. Student A should remain silent.
8 When Student B has finished, thank the students.

Allow 3–4 minutes for this activity.

• Are the student’s contributions relevant, despite some repetition?
• Are the student’s contributions usually more than just short statements, despite some hesitation?

Grammar and vocabulary

• Does the student show a good degree of control of simple grammatical forms and attempt some more
complex grammatical forms appropriate for the level?
