Basics(GC): Enriching Communication with

Idioms & Figurative Language

Objective:

By the end of the session, students will:

● Understand and use a variety of idioms and figurative expressions.


● Learn to fit idioms naturally into conversations.
● Practice using idioms to make their speech colorful and engaging.

Outline:

1. Warm-Up: Quick Idiom Brainstorm (5 minutes)

● Activity: Ask students to share any idioms they know in English (or in their native
language with an English translation).
● Discuss briefly how idioms can add flavor and emotion to speech, making
communication more memorable.

2. Idiom Match-Up Game (15 minutes)

● Objective: Familiarize students with idioms and their meanings.


● Instructions:
○ Hand out the list of idioms below. Assign each student a different idiom
and have them create two sentences: one that correctly uses the idiom
and one that misuses it.
○ The rest of the class votes on which sentence is correct.
● Idiom List:
○ Break the ice – Start a conversation comfortably.
○ On cloud nine – Extremely happy.
○ The ball is in your court – It’s up to you to decide.
○ Piece of cake – Very easy.
○ Hit the sack – Go to bed.
○ Bite the bullet – Face something challenging.
○ Costs an arm and a leg – Very expensive.
○ Burn the midnight oil – Stay up late working.
○ Throw in the towel – Give up.
○ Spill the beans – Reveal a secret.

3. Role-Playing: “Idiom Sales Pitch” (15 minutes)

● Objective: Practice using idioms creatively in conversation.


● Instructions:
○ Each student picks an idiom from the provided list below and “sells” it to
the group as if it’s a new, cool trend. They need to explain why everyone
should start using it!
○ Encourage creativity as they pitch their idioms.
● Idiom List for Sales Pitch:
○ The elephant in the room – An obvious problem no one is talking about.
○ Hit the nail on the head – Describe something perfectly.
○ A blessing in disguise – A good outcome from something bad.
○ A tough cookie – Someone who is strong or resilient.
○ Pull yourself together – Calm down.
○ Add fuel to the fire – Make a bad situation worse.
○ Call it a day – Stop working for the day.
○ Hang in there – Don’t give up.
○ Let the cat out of the bag – Reveal a secret.
○ Once in a blue moon – Very rarely.

4. Speed Story Creation: Idioms in Action (20 minutes)

● Objective: Practice creating quick, fun scenarios with idioms.


● Instructions:
○ Divide the students into pairs or groups of three.
○ Each group receives five idioms from the list below. In 5 minutes, they
create a funny or interesting story that uses each idiom at least once.
○ Groups take turns sharing their stories with the class.
● Idiom List for Story Creation:
○ Up in the air – Uncertain.
○ Cut corners – Do something the easy way.
○ Blow off steam – Release pent-up energy.
○ See eye to eye – Agree with someone.
○ Go the extra mile – Do more than what is expected.
○ Hit the road – Leave.
○ Kill two birds with one stone – Solve two problems with one action.
○ Bend over backwards – Try very hard to help someone.
○ In hot water – In trouble.
○ Scratch the surface – Only begin to explore.

SENTENCES:

- He decided to cut the corners even with all his thoughts up in the air
and hit the road. Not only did he leave without giving it a second
thought, but he went the extra mile by switching off his phone, so
no one could contact him.
- Even though it was very difficult, he went the extra mile and took a
greater risk.
- I thought I knew a lot about English pronunciation, but I had barely
scratched the surface.

5. Idiom Role-Play Challenge (20 minutes)

● Objective: Apply idioms in real-life conversational contexts.


● Instructions:
○ Each student receives a scenario and must incorporate at least one idiom
from the list provided in their dialogue.
○ Example Scenarios:
■ Discussing a busy day at work or school.
■ Explaining a tough decision to a friend.
■ Sharing advice on how to handle stress or challenges.
● Idiom List for Role-Play:
○ In the same boat – In the same situation.
○ The last straw – The final problem in a series of problems.
○ Give someone the cold shoulder – Ignore someone.
○ Under the weather – Feeling sick.
○ Time flies – Time goes by quickly.
○ Burn the bridges – Destroy relationships or connections.
○ Hit rock bottom – Reach the lowest point.
○ Pull strings – Use influence.
○ Read between the lines – Understand hidden meanings.
○ Ring a bell – Sound familiar.

6. Wrap-Up: Idiom Pledge and Share (5 minutes)

● Objective: Set personal goals for using idioms.


● Instructions: Ask each student to choose an idiom from today’s session that
they’ll try to use in the coming week. Each student shares their choice and how
they plan to use it in real life.
