Addition and Subtracting Integers

The document outlines a lesson plan by teacher Kate V. Velasquez focused on teaching students how to add and subtract integers. It includes rules for adding integers with like and unlike signs, as well as a method for subtracting integers called 'KEEP, CHANGE, CHANGE.' Additionally, there are exercises and assignments for students to practice these concepts.

Teacher: KATE V.

VELASQUEZ
Learning Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the students will be

able to;
• memorize the rules in adding and subtracting
integers; and
• apply the rules in addition and subtraction of
integers.
Activity: Give the absolute value
of the following.
|3| = 3
|-10| = 10
|-14| = 14
|9| = 9
Rules for Adding Integers
LIKE SIGNS: Find the sum of their absolute
(+)+(+) values, and use the sign common
to both integers.
(-) +(-)
Example:
3+4= 7 - 6 + ( - 5) = - 12 + ( - 16) =
6 + 5 = - 11 12 + 16 = - 28
Rules for Adding Integers
UNLIKE SIGNS: Find the difference of their
(+)+(-) absolute values, and use the sign
of the integer with the greater
(-) +(+) absolute value.
Example:
5 + (-3) = -7 + 4 =
5–3= 2 7 - 4 = -3
EXAMPLE:
1) 8 + (-3) =
8–3= 5 Note: An integer
without negating
sign ( - ) is automatic
2) (-15) + 6 = a positive integer.
15 - 6 =-9
Rules for Subtracting Integers
(+)−(+) In subtracting integers, change
(-) −(-) the operation into addition and
(+)−(-) then change the subtrahend. Then
(-) −(+) apply the rules in adding integers.

Or simply use the “ KEEP, CHANGE, CHANGE”

method
Example of Subtracting integers using the
KEEP, CHANGE, CHANGE method
GIVEN KEEP CHANGE CHANGE ANSWER

8 – 11 = 8 + (-11) 8 + (-11) =
8 – 11 = -3
-12 – (-16)= -12 + 16 -12 + 16 =
12 – 16 = 4
10 – (-6) = 10 + 6 10 + 6 = 16
-14 - (+8) = -14 + (-8) -14+ (-8) =
14 + 8 = -22
Exercise
activity
Exercise: In a one whole sheet of paper copy and answer
the following using the rules in adding and subtracting
integers.
1) 1 + 15 = ________
2) 19 - (-2) = ________
3) (-4) + (-18) = ________
4) (-12) - 7 = ________
5) 3 + (-20) = ________
ASSIGNMENT
#02
Direction: Find the missing interger(s) of the
following equations.
1) ____ - 17 = -1
2) 7 + ____ = 0
3) (-12) + ____ = 3
4) ____ + (-6) = -20
5) ____ - 20 = -31
